Utah is one of my favorite states for a road trip because every part of it feels completely different. You can go from towering canyon walls and red-rock arches to hoodoos, slot canyons and gorgeous mountain scenery—all in one state.

We’ve personally visited every destination on this list, and these are five Utah stops I’d recommend again and again.

Zion National Park

Plan for: 2–3 days
Best for: Hiking, dramatic scenery + iconic Utah views

Zion is one of those places that absolutely lives up to the hype. The massive canyon walls are incredible, and there are options for everything from easy scenic stops to bucket-list hikes.

Don’t miss:
• Zion Canyon Scenic Drive
• Canyon Overlook Trail
• The Narrows
• Emerald Pools
• Pa’rus Trail around sunset

Where to stay: Springdale is my first choice because you’re right outside the park entrance and can easily access restaurants and the park shuttle.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Zion gets BUSY. Start early, understand the current shuttle system before your trip, and check whether any hikes you want to do require permits.

Moab + Arches National Park

Plan for: 2–3 days
Best for: Red rocks, hiking + epic scenery

Moab makes an amazing home base for exploring eastern Utah. Arches National Park is the obvious star, but you can also easily add Canyonlands National Park or Dead Horse Point State Park if you have extra time.

Don’t miss:
• Delicate Arch
• Windows + Turret Arch
• Double Arch
• Balanced Rock
• Park Avenue
• Scenic drive through Arches

Where to stay: Stay in Moab so you have easy access to the parks plus plenty of restaurants and shops.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Check the current Arches entry requirements before your trip. If you can, get into the park early and stay through sunset—the red rocks are gorgeous in that evening light.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Plan for: 1–2 days
Best for: Hoodoos, overlooks + a completely unique landscape

Bryce Canyon doesn’t look like anywhere else in Utah. Even if you aren’t planning a major hike, it’s worth visiting just to see the amphitheater filled with thousands of hoodoos.

Don’t miss:
• Sunrise Point
• Sunset Point
• Bryce Amphitheater
• Navajo Loop + Queen’s Garden
• Scenic drive and overlooks

Where to stay: Bryce Canyon City is the easiest option for staying close to the park.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Bryce sits at a much higher elevation than many of Utah’s other popular destinations. Temperatures can be significantly cooler, so bring layers—even when southern Utah feels warm.

---

Kanab

Plan for: 2–3 days
Best for: Hidden gems, slot canyons + outdoor adventures

Kanab is such a good base for exploring southern Utah. It’s surrounded by incredible scenery and gives you access to several adventures that feel a little different from the big national parks.

Don’t miss:
• Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon
• Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
• Belly of the Dragon
• Toadstool Hoodoos
• Downtown Kanab

If you’re hoping to visit The Wave, remember that a permit is required and access is extremely limited.

Where to stay: Stay right in Kanab. It’s a small town with hotels, restaurants and easy access to tons of outdoor adventures.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Don’t treat Kanab as just a place to sleep between national parks. Give yourself at least one full day to explore the area.

---

Snowbird + Wasatch Mountains

Plan for: 1–2 days
Best for: Mountain scenery, scenic drives + fall color

Utah isn’t only red rocks! The Wasatch Mountains are gorgeous, especially during fall when the aspens turn bright yellow. We stayed in Snowbird and loved having a completely different Utah experience.

Don’t miss:
• Little Cottonwood Canyon
• Snowbird
• Scenic mountain drives
• Hiking in the Wasatch
• Fall foliage if you’re visiting in late September/early October

Where to stay: Snowbird is perfect if you want to wake up surrounded by the mountains. You can also stay closer to Salt Lake City and make the Wasatch Mountains a day trip.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Fall color timing changes every year and varies by elevation, so don’t plan a trip around one exact “peak” date.

How I’d Plan a Utah Road Trip

You do not need to visit all five destinations on one trip. Utah is huge, and trying to squeeze everything into a few days will mean spending way too much time in the car.

For a first trip to southern Utah, I’d combine Zion + Bryce Canyon + Kanab.

For a Moab-focused trip, I’d stay several nights in Moab and explore Arches + Canyonlands + Dead Horse Point.

For a fall mountain getaway, I’d focus on Snowbird + the Wasatch Mountains and add time in Salt Lake City.

And if you have enough time for one BIG Utah road trip? Then start connecting the dots.

Before You Go

Always check current national park alerts, road conditions, permits, shuttle schedules and entry requirements before leaving home. Utah’s weather and park operations can change by season.

Most importantly, don’t try to see everything. Pick a few places, leave room for unexpected stops and enjoy the drive.
