Where to Stay Along the Route
Here’s how I recommend dividing your four nights:
Night 1: Carlsbad, New Mexico

Night 4: Carlsbad, New Mexico
This schedule gives you two nights in the mountains and keeps your national park visits in a logical order.
What to Pack
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Layers for changing temperatures
- Light jacket for Carlsbad Caverns
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Refillable water bottles
- Snacks and a small cooler
- Sand sled for White Sands
- Portable phone charger
- Offline maps
- National park pass, if applicable
Important Road Trip Planning Tips
1. Reserve Carlsbad Caverns Entry in Advance
Timed-entry reservations are required for cavern access. Book early, especially during busy travel periods.
2. Check National Park Alerts
Weather, seasonal conditions, and temporary closures can affect your plans. Always check the official National Park Service websites before visiting.
3. Pay Attention to Time Zones
Dallas is in Central Time, while New Mexico and Guadalupe Mountains National Park operate on Mountain Time. You’ll gain an hour heading west and lose it when returning to Dallas.
4. Download Offline Maps
Some stretches of this route have limited cell service. Download your maps before leaving.
5. Consider the America the Beautiful Pass
If you plan to visit several national parks throughout the year, an annual pass may save you money. Check current pricing and eligibility before purchasing.
6. Add an Extra Day if Possible
Five days is doable, but this itinerary includes two long driving days. Six days would give you more flexibility to hike, explore, and enjoy the scenery!
