There are some seriously beautiful fall destinations within road-trip distance of Dallas — from golden aspens in the Rocky Mountains to waterfalls surrounded by fiery Tennessee foliage.
Whether you’re looking for an easy weekend getaway or an epic long-weekend adventure, these are six of the best fall road trips from Dallas to add to your bucket list.

1. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
If you want the ultimate fall road trip from Dallas, Rocky Mountain National Park is hard to beat.
September transforms the mountains around Estes Park with brilliant golden aspens, while elk become especially active during the annual fall rut. Add snow-dusted peaks, mountain lakes and scenic drives, and this is one of my favorite places to experience fall in the West.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 800 miles
Drive time: Approximately 12–13 hours
Where to stay: Estes Park, Colorado
Ideal trip length: 3–4 nights
Best Time to Visit
Aspen color typically begins appearing in September, with some of the most impressive color often occurring from mid-September through early October.
Because elevation varies dramatically throughout the park, foliage can peak at different times in different areas.
Things to Do
Bear Lake
Bear Lake is one of the easiest places to experience classic Rocky Mountain scenery. You can take the short trail around the lake or use the area as a starting point for longer hikes.
Hike to Dream Lake
One of my favorite hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park, the route from Bear Lake to Nymph Lake and Dream Lake packs an incredible amount of scenery into a relatively short hike.
Drive Trail Ridge Road
If weather and road conditions cooperate, drive Trail Ridge Road for incredible high-elevation views.
Fall weather can change quickly, however, and portions of the road eventually close for winter.
Look for Elk
Fall is elk rut season. Estes Park and areas inside RMNP can be fantastic places to see — and hear — elk.
Always keep a safe distance and never approach wildlife.
Explore Estes Park
Leave time to walk around downtown Estes Park, grab dinner, shop and enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere.
Important 2026 Reservation Information
Rocky Mountain National Park is using a timed-entry system during the 2026 season. There are two different permits:
Timed Entry provides access to most of Rocky Mountain National Park but does NOT include the Bear Lake Road Corridor.
Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road includes Bear Lake Road as well as the rest of the park.
Timed entry requirements continue into October, so check the exact requirements for your travel dates before visiting.
Where to Stay
I recommend making Estes Park your home base. You’ll be close to the park entrances while also having easy access to restaurants, shops and lodging.
Options range from hotels and cabins to vacation rentals and campgrounds.
Road Trip Queen Tip
Fall mornings in RMNP can be COLD even when afternoons are comfortable. Pack layers, gloves and a warm jacket — especially if you plan to start hiking around sunrise.
2. Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico
Bandelier might be one of the most underrated fall destinations in the Southwest.
Instead of the classic mountain scenery you’ll find in Colorado, Bandelier combines golden cottonwoods, canyon walls, ancient Pueblo sites and ladders leading into cliff dwellings.
It’s a completely different fall experience.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 650–700 miles
Drive time: Approximately 10–11 hours
Where to stay: Los Alamos or Santa Fe
Ideal trip length: 2–3 nights
Best Time to Visit
Fall colors generally begin appearing in the higher elevations first, with beautiful color often developing from late September through October.
October can also be a busy month in northern New Mexico, especially around Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta dates.
Things to Do
Pueblo Loop Trail
This is the must-do trail for a first visit.
The trail passes archaeological sites in Frijoles Canyon and gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo people who lived here.
Explore the Cavates
One of the coolest parts of visiting Bandelier is climbing ladders into some of the small human-carved alcoves in the canyon walls.
Alcove House
For a bigger adventure, continue to Alcove House. Reaching it involves climbing a series of ladders, so this isn’t the best option for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
Explore Frijoles Canyon
Take your time walking through the canyon. During fall, the colorful trees against the pale canyon walls make this area especially beautiful.
Add Santa Fe
If you’re driving this far from Dallas, consider pairing Bandelier with Santa Fe. Spend an afternoon exploring the historic plaza, adobe architecture, shops and restaurants.
Entrance Fee
Bandelier currently charges $25 per private vehicle, valid for seven days.
America the Beautiful passes are accepted.
2026 Shuttle Information
Bandelier is operating seasonal shuttle service in 2026. The shuttle is not automatically required, but it may become necessary when parking lots inside the canyon fill.
If you’re visiting during a busy fall weekend, arrive early and check current shuttle information before your trip.

Los Alamos: Best if your priority is getting to Bandelier quickly.
Santa Fe: My pick if you want to turn this into a full fall getaway with great restaurants, shopping and another destination to explore.

3. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas
You don’t even have to leave Texas for beautiful fall scenery.
Often called the Grand Canyon of Texas, Palo Duro Canyon combines dramatic red and orange canyon walls with cottonwoods and other vegetation that change color as temperatures cool.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 375 miles
Drive time: Approximately 5.5–6 hours
Where to stay: Canyon or Amarillo
Ideal trip length: 2 nights
Best Time to Visit
I love Palo Duro in October and early November.
Temperatures are typically much more comfortable for hiking than during the brutal summer months, and you may catch some fall color inside the canyon.
Things to Do
Lighthouse Trail
This is the iconic Palo Duro hike. The trail leads to the famous Lighthouse rock formation and is one of the most recognizable hikes in Texas.
Drive the Park Road
You don’t have to tackle a long hike to appreciate Palo Duro. Drive down into the canyon and stop at overlooks and scenic areas throughout the park.
Catch Sunrise or Sunset
The canyon walls absolutely glow when the light hits them. If you’re staying nearby, try to experience at least one sunrise or sunset inside the park.
Explore Canyon or Amarillo
Add extra time for nearby attractions or head into Amarillo for dinner.
Entrance Fee
Current day-use admission is $8 per adult, while children 12 and younger are free.
Palo Duro frequently reaches capacity, so Texas Parks & Wildlife recommends making advance reservations for both day use and camping.
Where to Stay
Inside Palo Duro: Camping is the most immersive option.
Canyon: Closest town and convenient for a weekend focused on the park.
Amarillo: Best for a larger selection of hotels and restaurants.
Road Trip Queen Tip
Don’t underestimate Palo Duro just because you’re visiting in fall. Temperatures inside the canyon can still become warm, and much of the hiking is exposed. Carry plenty of water.
4. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma
This is one of my favorite easy road trips from Dallas because you can leave North Texas and feel like you’ve traveled much farther away.
The Wichita Mountains combine granite peaks, prairie, lakes and roaming wildlife — including bison and longhorn.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 200 miles
Drive time: Approximately 3–3.5 hours
Where to stay: Medicine Park or Lawton
Ideal trip length: 1–2 nights
Best Time to Visit
For cooler temperatures and fall scenery, aim for late October into early November.
The Wichita Mountains don’t have the sweeping aspen forests of Colorado, but the mix of changing vegetation, golden prairie and granite mountains creates a beautiful fall landscape.
Things to Do
Drive Mount Scott
One of the easiest ways to get a huge view is the Mount Scott scenic drive. From the top, you can look across miles of mountains, prairie and lakes.
Hike
The refuge has trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging rocky routes.
Options include:
- Jed Johnson Tower Trail
- Narrows Trail
- Kite Trail
- Bison Trail
- Elk Mountain Trail
Check current trail conditions and restrictions before visiting.
Wildlife Watching
Keep an eye out for:
- Bison
- Longhorn cattle
- Elk
- Prairie dogs
- Deer
Wildlife is often more active early and late in the day.
Visit Medicine Park
This tiny cobblestone town just outside the refuge makes a great addition to your trip.
Walk along the creek, grab lunch and enjoy the quirky mountain-town atmosphere.

There is currently no entrance fee to visit Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
Camping does require a fee and reservations.
Where to Stay
Medicine Park: My pick for a fun weekend getaway.
Lawton: Usually offers more traditional hotel choices.
You can also camp at Doris Campground inside the refuge.
Important Note
The refuge can temporarily restrict hiking because of extreme heat, fire danger or other conditions. Check current refuge alerts shortly before leaving Dallas.

Drive slowly through the refuge. Bison and longhorn roam freely, and some of the best wildlife encounters happen when you aren’t rushing from one attraction to another.
5. Carter Caves State Resort Park, Kentucky
If you want classic fall foliage AND an unexpected adventure, put Carter Caves on your list.
This Kentucky state park combines colorful forests, natural bridges, hiking trails and more than 20 caves.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 900 miles
Drive time: Approximately 13–14 hours
Location: Olive Hill, Kentucky
Ideal trip length: 2–3 nights
Best Time to Visit
For fall color, I would target mid-to-late October, although peak foliage changes from year to year.
The forested landscape is exactly what you picture when you think of a cozy fall road trip.
Things to Do
Cascade Cave
This is the cave tour I would put at the top of the list. The approximately 75-minute tour travels about ¾ mile and includes a 30-foot underground waterfall. There are 225 stairs along the route.
X Cave
If you want a shorter cave experience, X Cave is approximately 45 minutes and ¼ mile long. You’ll encounter narrow passages, rock formations and around 75 stairs.
Natural Bridge
Don’t spend your entire trip underground! Explore the trails above ground to experience the park’s forests and natural rock formations — especially during peak fall color.
Go Hiking
Carter Caves has a network of trails winding through forest, rock formations and natural bridges.

Because schedules can change seasonally, always check the current tour schedule before driving to Kentucky.

One of the coolest things about Carter Caves is that you can stay right inside the state park.

Staying inside the park makes this feel like a true fall escape.

Arrive at the Welcome Center early if a cave tour is important to you. Since tickets are first come, first served, I wouldn’t wait until late afternoon to try to grab your preferred tour.
6. Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee
If you want the ultimate waterfall + fall foliage combination, this is it.
Fall Creek Falls State Park sits on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau and is packed with waterfalls, gorges, forests and hiking trails.
The park’s namesake waterfall plunges 256 feet, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States.
Distance from Dallas: Approximately 750 miles
Drive time: Approximately 10.5–11.5 hours
Location: Spencer, Tennessee
Ideal trip length: 2–3 nights
Best Time to Visit
For the best chance at colorful foliage, plan for mid-October through early November. Because fall color depends on weather conditions, check Tennessee’s foliage reports as your trip approaches.

Fall Creek Falls Overlook
Start with the classic overlook for one of the park’s signature views.
Hike Toward the Base of Fall Creek Falls
If conditions allow and you’re comfortable with the terrain, get a completely different perspective by hiking down toward the gorge.
Cane Creek Falls
Don’t stop after seeing the namesake waterfall. Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek Cascades are also worth visiting.
Piney Falls
Add another waterfall stop if you have enough time.
Explore the Hiking Trails
The park has miles of hiking trails through forest, along streams and around the gorge.
Where to Stay
This is one destination where I really like staying inside the park.
Options include:
The Lodge at Fall Creek Falls — the easiest option if you want hotel-style accommodations.
Park cabins — perfect for a cozy fall weekend. The park has both landside cabins and cabins along Fall Creek Lake.
Camping — more than 200 campsites are available throughout the park.
Cabins can require a minimum stay, especially on weekends, so book fall dates early.

Give Fall Creek Falls at least one FULL day. There’s much more here than one waterfall, and you’ll miss some of the best parts of the park if you only drive in, photograph the main falls and leave.
