If you’re looking for an unforgettable fall road trip from Dallas, put Rocky Mountain National Park at the top of your list.
Golden aspens, turquoise alpine lakes, waterfalls, mountain roads, wildlife and crisp Colorado air make this one of my favorite fall destinations. And while it’s definitely a longer road trip from Texas, this is one that is absolutely worth the drive.
We’ve explored Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall, and there’s just something special about seeing those mountains surrounded by golden aspens.
This guide covers everything you need to plan your own Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park fall road trip, including where to stay, my favorite hikes, scenic drives, when to visit and a suggested itinerary.
Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park
Destination: Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Starting Point: Dallas, Texas
Recommended Trip Length: 4–5 days minimum
Best Home Base: Estes Park, Colorado
Best For: Fall colors, hiking, mountain scenery, wildlife and scenic drives
This is a road trip I’d recommend giving yourself at least four days for. If you can make it a five-day trip, even better. The extra time gives you more flexibility for weather and allows you to enjoy the park without feeling like you have to squeeze everything into one day.
When Should You Visit Rocky Mountain National Park for Fall Colors?
Fall arrives early in the mountains. The National Park Service says aspens and other vegetation generally begin changing from green to gold, orange and red in early to mid-September. Fall is also elk-rut season, so you may hear elk bugling around the park, particularly around dawn and dusk.
If fall color is your main goal, I would personally start looking at dates around mid- to late September, while remembering that peak color varies from year to year and by elevation.
And pack for more than one season! September in the Rockies can bring beautiful sunny days, freezing temperatures, rain, hail and even snow at higher elevations. Conditions can change incredibly quickly.
Where to Stay
For this particular trip, I recommend making Estes Park your home base. Estes Park sits just outside the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park and makes it easy to get an early start for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, where several of my favorite hikes are located.
There are no hotels or lodges inside Rocky Mountain National Park, so most visitors stay in gateway communities such as Estes Park or Grand Lake.
If you prefer camping, Rocky Mountain National Park also has developed campgrounds. Reservations can fill well in advance, so this is something I would book early.
IMPORTANT: Rocky Mountain National Park Timed Entry Reservations
Do NOT skip this part when planning your trip! For 2026, Rocky Mountain National Park is using two different timed-entry reservations.
Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road
This is the reservation I would prioritize for this itinerary. It includes the Bear Lake Road Corridor AND the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park.
In 2026, this reservation is required to enter the Bear Lake Road Corridor between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from May 22 through October 18.
That matters because Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake and several of the other places in this guide are accessed from this area.
Regular Timed Entry
The regular timed-entry reservation gives you access to most of Rocky Mountain National Park except Bear Lake Road.
For 2026, it is required between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. from May 22 through October 12.
Timed-entry reservations cost a $2 processing fee, and additional reservations are released at 7 p.m. Mountain Time the night before the desired arrival date. Those can go quickly, so I would not make that your primary plan.
Road Trip Queen Tip: If you know your dates, reserve your timed entry as soon as your booking window opens.
My Favorite Rocky Mountain National Park Fall Hikes
You do NOT have to be an extreme hiker to see incredible scenery in Rocky Mountain National Park. One of the reasons I love the Bear Lake area is that you can see multiple alpine lakes along the same trail system.
Nymph Lake
Nymph Lake is your first major stop when hiking from Bear Lake toward Dream and Emerald Lakes.
According to the National Park Service, Nymph Lake is approximately 0.5 mile one way from Bear Lake, with about 225 feet of elevation gain.
It’s a beautiful introduction to the trail, but keep going. It gets even better.
Dream Lake
Next up is Dream Lake, and this is one you definitely don’t want to miss. Dream Lake sits approximately 1.1 miles one way from the Bear Lake Trailhead, with about 425 feet of elevation gain.
The combination of water and dramatic mountain peaks makes this one of those classic Rocky Mountain National Park views.
Emerald Lake
Continue past Dream Lake to reach Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is approximately 1.8 miles one way from Bear Lake, with about 605 feet of elevation gain.
Instead of treating Nymph, Dream and Emerald as three separate hikes, I recommend doing them together.
You get three gorgeous alpine lakes on one hike, which makes this one of my favorite ways to spend a morning in RMNP.
Lake Haiyaha
Want to add another spectacular alpine lake? Head to Lake Haiyaha. From Bear Lake, the NPS lists Lake Haiyaha at approximately 2.1 miles one way with 745 feet of elevation gain.
The huge boulders surrounding the water make this lake feel completely different from Dream or Emerald. If you have the time and energy, add it to your Bear Lake hiking day.
Alberta Falls
Another must-see is Alberta Falls. From the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, Alberta Falls is approximately 0.8 mile one way, with about 160 feet of elevation gain.
It’s a great option if you want a relatively short hike with a big payoff.
Depending on how much hiking you want to do, you can combine Alberta Falls with other destinations in the Bear Lake/Glacier Gorge area or give it its own outing.
Don’t Skip the Scenic Drives
You could spend your entire trip hiking, but don’t. Some of my favorite memories from our fall trip came from simply driving through Rocky Mountain National Park. Roll down the windows, take your time and watch the landscape change around you. The golden aspens against the dark green evergreens and mountain peaks are gorgeous.
And keep your eyes open for wildlife!
Wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park
Fall is an especially exciting time for wildlife viewing because it coincides with the elk rut. You may hear bull elk bugling across the meadows, especially around dawn and dusk. We also spotted deer right along the road surrounded by fall foliage, which was one of those completely unplanned moments that made the trip even better.
Always give wildlife plenty of space. Never approach or feed animals, even if they appear calm.
Trail Ridge Road
If conditions allow, add Trail Ridge Road to your itinerary. This famous scenic road climbs into the alpine tundra and offers completely different scenery from the lower elevations of the park. But there’s an important catch when visiting in fall: weather.
Snow and ice can cause temporary closures of Trail Ridge Road even in September, so don’t build your entire itinerary around it without checking conditions first. I recommend checking the official park conditions the morning you plan to drive it.
A 5-Day Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park Fall Road Trip
Here’s how I would structure the trip if you’re driving from Dallas.
DAY 1: Dallas → Estes Park
Hit the road early and make the drive to Colorado. Once you arrive in Estes Park, check into your hotel or cabin, grab dinner and get some sleep. Don’t over-plan your first evening. You’ll want your energy for an early morning in the park.
DAY 2: Bear Lake + Nymph Lake + Dream Lake + Emerald Lake
This is your BIG alpine-lake day. Start early and head toward Bear Lake.
Hike:
- Bear Lake
- Nymph Lake
- Dream Lake
- Emerald Lake
Take your time at each lake and enjoy the scenery rather than treating the hike like a race. If you’re visiting during peak fall color, leave extra time for photo stops throughout the day.
DAY 3: Alberta Falls + Scenic Driving + Wildlife
Start with Alberta Falls. After your hike, give yourself a less structured afternoon. Drive through the park, stop at overlooks, look for fall color and keep an eye out for wildlife. This is one of those destinations where you don’t need every hour scheduled. Sometimes the best part is simply seeing where the road takes you.
DAY 4: Lake Haiyaha + Trail Ridge Road
If your legs are ready for another hike, make Lake Haiyaha your morning destination. Afterward, check the weather and road conditions. If Trail Ridge Road is open and conditions are good, spend the afternoon exploring the higher elevations.
If weather shuts down your plans, use this as an extra Estes Park or lower-elevation park day instead.
DAY 5: Estes Park → Dallas
Grab breakfast or coffee, enjoy one last mountain view and start the drive home. And immediately start wondering when you can come back.
Only Have 4 Days?
You can still make it work.
I would combine Alberta Falls with your Bear Lake hiking day, then use your second full day for Lake Haiyaha, scenic driving, wildlife viewing and Trail Ridge Road if conditions cooperate.
It will be a faster-paced trip, but you’ll still experience many of the highlights.
What to Pack for Rocky Mountain National Park in the Fall
Colorado mountain weather can change FAST, so layers are essential.
I recommend bringing:
- Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
- Warm jacket
- Layers
- Rain jacket
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Plenty of water
- Hiking snacks
- Small daypack
- Portable phone charger
- Camera
- Offline maps
Don’t depend on having cell service inside the park. The National Park Service specifically warns visitors that many areas have no service. There are also no gas stations inside RMNP, so fill up before entering the park.
Tips Before You Go
- Start early. Popular trailheads and parking areas can get busy.
- Download your maps ahead of time. Cell service is unreliable inside the park.
- Pack layers. A beautiful sunny morning can turn into a cold afternoon surprisingly quickly.
- Check conditions every morning. This is especially important if you’re planning to drive Trail Ridge Road.
- Don’t forget your timed entry reservation. If Bear Lake is part of your itinerary, make sure you understand the separate Bear Lake Road requirements.
- Give yourself flexibility. Mountain weather doesn’t care about your itinerary. Have a Plan B.
- Leave room for spontaneous stops. Some of the best fall views aren’t necessarily the ones you planned.
Is Rocky Mountain National Park Worth the Drive from Dallas?
For me, absolutely.
If you love mountain hikes, alpine lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, scenic drives and fall color, Rocky Mountain National Park packs an incredible amount into one destination. Yes, it’s a longer road trip from Texas. But that’s exactly what Road Trip Queen is about.
You don’t always have to get on an airplane to have an incredible vacation. Sometimes you just need a full tank of gas, a few days off and a road pointing toward the mountains.
