Posted in ColoradoTagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Leave a comment

If you’re willing to spend a day on the road, Colorado opens up some incredible road trip possibilities from Dallas. Think mountain towns, alpine lakes, waterfalls, red-rock formations, national parks and some seriously beautiful drives.

We’ve personally visited every destination on this list, and these are 10 Colorado road trips I think are worth making from Texas.

Whether you’re planning a long weekend, a summer vacation or a bigger Colorado road trip, use this guide as your starting point!

Quick Guide: Colorado Road Trips From Dallas

Garden of the Gods — 725 miles | 11 hours
Rocky Mountain National Park — 856 miles | 13 hours
Paint Mines Interpretive Park — 729 miles | 11 hours
Silverton — 906 miles | 14 hours
Cripple Creek — 763 miles | 11.5 hours
Ouray — 900 miles | 14.5 hours
Mesa Verde National Park — 888 miles | 13.5 hours
Crested Butte — 788 miles | 13.5 hours
Woodland Park — 738 miles | 11 hours
Pikes Peak — 717 miles | 10.5 hours

Drive times are approximate from Dallas and can vary depending on your route, traffic, weather and stops.

1. Garden of the Gods

Best for: Red rocks, easy hiking and families
Recommended stay: 1–2 days
Best time to visit: May–October

Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite stops in the Colorado Springs area because you get huge red-rock formations with Pikes Peak in the distance—and you don’t need a strenuous hike to enjoy it.

Don’t Miss

  • Drive the scenic roads through the park
  • Walk the paved Central Garden Trail
  • Balanced Rock
  • Explore some of the park’s shorter hiking trails
  • Stop at the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center
  • Visit early in the morning for fewer crowds

Road Trip Queen Tip

Pair Garden of the Gods with Pikes Peak. They’re close enough that I would absolutely combine them into one Colorado Springs-area trip rather than drive from Texas for each separately.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Best for: Hiking, alpine lakes, waterfalls and wildlife
Recommended stay: 2–4 days
Best time to visit: June–September

If you only make one Colorado national park trip, Rocky Mountain National Park gives you that classic Colorado experience: mountain peaks, gorgeous lakes, wildlife, waterfalls and scenic drives.

Don’t Miss

  • Bear Lake
  • Nymph Lake
  • Dream Lake
  • Emerald Lake
  • Alberta Falls
  • Lake Haiyaha
  • Trail Ridge Road
  • Wildlife watching around the park

The Bear Lake area is especially good if hiking is a priority because you can reach several beautiful lakes from the same general area.

Know Before You Go

RMNP uses a timed-entry reservation system during its busiest season. In 2026, reservations are required during certain hours from May 22 into October, and the Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road option is required for the Bear Lake Road Corridor. Always check the current requirements before your trip because these details can change from year to year.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Stay in Estes Park if this is your first visit. It puts you close to the park while giving you restaurants, shopping and plenty to do after your hikes.

3. Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Best for: Unique scenery, photography and an easy adventure
Recommended stay: Half day
Best time to visit: May–October

Paint Mines is one of those places that doesn’t look like you expect Colorado to look—and that’s exactly why I love adding it to a Colorado road trip.

The colorful layers of pink, orange, yellow and white rock make this completely different from the mountain destinations on this list.

Don’t Miss

  • Walk down into the colorful formations
  • Explore the hoodoos and spires
  • Take your time along the trails
  • Bring your camera—the colors are incredible against a blue Colorado sky

Road Trip Queen Tip

You don’t need an entire vacation for Paint Mines. Add it to a trip that includes Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak.

4. Silverton

Best for: Mountain scenery, alpine lakes and scenic drives
Recommended stay: 2–3 days
Best time to visit: June–September

Silverton is the Colorado you picture in your head before you ever get there.

Tiny mountain town. Huge peaks. Wildflowers. Bright blue alpine lakes. Scenic roads in practically every direction.

Don’t Miss

  • Explore historic downtown Silverton
  • Drive part of the Million Dollar Highway
  • Visit nearby alpine lakes
  • Look for summer wildflowers
  • Take a scenic drive through the San Juan Mountains
  • Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad if it fits your itinerary

Road Trip Queen Tip

Don’t rush this area. The drive itself is part of the experience. Build extra time into your itinerary for overlooks and spontaneous stops.

5. Cripple Creek

Best for: History, quirky attractions and something different
Recommended stay: 1 day
Best time to visit: May–October

Cripple Creek is a fun addition because it gives you something completely different from Colorado’s national parks and alpine lakes.

This historic mining town still has plenty of Old West character, and the surrounding mountains make the drive worthwhile too.

Don’t Miss

  • Explore historic downtown
  • Learn about the area’s gold-mining history
  • See the old mining structures
  • Look for nearby hiking and waterfalls
  • Find the area’s giant wooden troll

Road Trip Queen Tip

I’d combine Cripple Creek with Woodland Park, Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods for a Colorado Springs-area road trip.

6. Ouray

Best for: Waterfalls, mountain scenery and adventure
Recommended stay: 2–3 days
Best time to visit: June–September

Ouray may be one of the prettiest small towns in Colorado.

Surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, it has earned the nickname “Switzerland of America.” This is the place to go if you want waterfalls, dramatic mountain scenery and outdoor adventure.

Don’t Miss

  • Box Cañon Falls
  • Cascade Falls
  • Explore downtown Ouray
  • Drive the Million Dollar Highway
  • Soak in the Ouray Hot Springs
  • Stop at overlooks along the surrounding mountain roads

Road Trip Queen Tip

Combine Ouray and Silverton. They make much more sense as one road trip than two separate vacations from Dallas. The drive connecting this area is one of the highlights.

7. Mesa Verde National Park

Best for: History, archaeology and something completely unique
Recommended stay: 1–2 days
Best time to visit: May–October

Mesa Verde is unlike anywhere else on this list.

The park preserves the cultural heritage and remarkable structures of Ancestral Pueblo people, including hundreds of cliff dwellings built into sandstone alcoves.

Don’t Miss

  • Cliff Palace
  • Balcony House
  • Mesa Top Loop Road
  • Cliff-dwelling overlooks
  • Park Point
  • Mesa Verde Museum

If you can, take a ranger-led cliff dwelling tour. It completely changes the experience compared with only seeing the sites from overlooks.

Know Before You Go

For the 2026 season, most cliff dwellings can only be entered on a reserved ranger-led tour. Reservations open 14 days in advance, and the National Park Service warns that they can fill quickly. Mesa Top Loop is an excellent option even without a tour, with a six-mile drive connecting ancestral sites and overlooks.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Don’t underestimate driving time inside the park. NPS notes that reaching tour sites can take 55–90 minutes, so don’t schedule your day too tightly.

8. Crested Butte

Best for: Wildflowers, hiking and mountain-town charm
Recommended stay: 2–3 days
Best time to visit: June–September

Crested Butte is one of my favorite places for a summer Colorado trip.

The mountains are gorgeous, but I also love that the town itself is part of the experience. Colorful buildings, flowers and mountain views give it a completely different personality from some of Colorado’s busier destinations.

Don’t Miss

  • Walk through downtown Crested Butte
  • Take a scenic drive
  • Go hiking
  • Look for wildflowers in summer
  • Explore around Mt. Crested Butte
  • Find a mountain lake or river spot to enjoy

Road Trip Queen Tip

If wildflowers are one of the reasons you’re going, summer is the time I’d choose. Crested Butte is beautiful without snow and deserves a spot on a Colorado summer road trip.

9. Woodland Park

Best for: A quieter mountain base and outdoor activities
Recommended stay: 1–2 days
Best time to visit: May–October

Woodland Park is a good choice if you’d rather stay in a smaller mountain community than right in Colorado Springs.

You’ll find forests, trails, rock formations and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the mountains.

Don’t Miss

  • Explore nearby hiking trails
  • Enjoy views of Pikes Peak
  • Look for interesting rock formations
  • Spend some time around the area’s lakes and forests
  • Use Woodland Park as a base for nearby day trips

Road Trip Queen Tip

This is another destination I wouldn’t necessarily make a stand-alone 11-hour drive for. Instead, use Woodland Park as part of a Pikes Peak + Garden of the Gods + Cripple Creek itinerary.

10. Pikes Peak

Best for: Scenic driving and huge mountain views
Recommended stay: Half day–1 day
Best time to visit: Late spring–early fall

Driving to the summit of Pikes Peak is an experience all by itself.

The scenery changes dramatically as you climb, and by the time you reach the summit at 14,115 feet, you’re looking across an enormous stretch of Colorado.

Don’t Miss

  • Drive the Pikes Peak Highway
  • Stop at scenic overlooks on the way up
  • Visit the summit
  • Give yourself time to adjust to the elevation
  • Watch the weather—it can be completely different at the top

Road Trip Queen Tip

Don’t treat the drive up as something you need to hurry through. Stop at the overlooks and enjoy it. Garden of the Gods + Pikes Peak makes an excellent combination for a first Colorado Springs trip.

How I Would Group These Into Road Trips

You definitely don’t need to make 10 separate drives from Dallas!

Colorado Springs Road Trip

  • Garden of the Gods + Pikes Peak + Paint Mines + Woodland Park + Cripple Creek
  • Give yourself approximately 3–5 days depending on how much hiking and exploring you want to do.

Southwest Colorado Road Trip

  • Ouray + Silverton + Mesa Verde National Park
  • I’d give this trip 4–6 days. The distances may not look huge on a map, but mountain roads and scenic stops make everything take longer—and that’s part of the fun.

Rocky Mountain National Park Trip

  • Rocky Mountain National Park + Estes Park
  • Plan for 3–4 days if you want enough time for several hikes, Trail Ridge Road and Estes Park without rushing.

Crested Butte Getaway

  • Give Crested Butte 2–3 days, or work it into a longer Colorado mountain road trip.

When Is the Best Time to Road Trip From Dallas to Colorado?

For the destinations in this particular guide, I love June through September.

Summer gives you the best chance of accessing high-elevation roads and trails, seeing wildflowers and enjoying the alpine lakes. September can be especially beautiful as fall color begins appearing in the mountains.

Colorado mountain weather can change quickly, though, and high-elevation roads can be affected by snow outside the summer season. Always check road, trail and park conditions before leaving.

A Few Things to Know Before Your Colorado Road Trip

Altitude is real. Take it easier than you normally would when you first arrive, especially at places like Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Mountain drives take longer than they look. A short distance on the map can involve winding roads, elevation changes and lots of places you’ll want to stop.

Make reservations early. National park timed-entry permits, cliff dwelling tours and popular lodging can require advance planning. RMNP and Mesa Verde currently have reservation requirements for some experiences, so check the official park sites before every trip.

Pack layers. You can leave your hotel in warm sunshine and find much cooler temperatures at higher elevations.

Don’t overschedule. Some of our favorite Colorado memories have come from the scenic drives and unexpected stops between destinations.

Which Colorado Road Trip Would You Choose?

One of the things I love most about Colorado is that every trip can feel completely different.

You can hike to an alpine lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, walk among colorful formations at Paint Mines, explore ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde, chase waterfalls in Ouray or simply drive through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the country.

And every destination on this list is road-trip reachable from Dallas.

Save this guide for later and send it to someone you’d road trip to Colorado with!

The Ultimate Fall Road Trip from Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park

Posted in Colorado, National Parks, Rocky Mountain National ParkTagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Leave a comment

If you’re looking for an unforgettable fall road trip from Dallas, put Rocky Mountain National Park at the top of your list.

Golden aspens, turquoise alpine lakes, waterfalls, mountain roads, wildlife and crisp Colorado air make this one of my favorite fall destinations. And while it’s definitely a longer road trip from Texas, this is one that is absolutely worth the drive.

We’ve explored Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall, and there’s just something special about seeing those mountains surrounded by golden aspens.

This guide covers everything you need to plan your own Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park fall road trip, including where to stay, my favorite hikes, scenic drives, when to visit and a suggested itinerary.

Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park

Destination: Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Starting Point: Dallas, Texas
Recommended Trip Length: 4–5 days minimum
Best Home Base: Estes Park, Colorado
Best For: Fall colors, hiking, mountain scenery, wildlife and scenic drives

This is a road trip I’d recommend giving yourself at least four days for. If you can make it a five-day trip, even better. The extra time gives you more flexibility for weather and allows you to enjoy the park without feeling like you have to squeeze everything into one day.

When Should You Visit Rocky Mountain National Park for Fall Colors?

Fall arrives early in the mountains. The National Park Service says aspens and other vegetation generally begin changing from green to gold, orange and red in early to mid-September. Fall is also elk-rut season, so you may hear elk bugling around the park, particularly around dawn and dusk.

If fall color is your main goal, I would personally start looking at dates around mid- to late September, while remembering that peak color varies from year to year and by elevation.

And pack for more than one season! September in the Rockies can bring beautiful sunny days, freezing temperatures, rain, hail and even snow at higher elevations. Conditions can change incredibly quickly.

Where to Stay

For this particular trip, I recommend making Estes Park your home base. Estes Park sits just outside the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park and makes it easy to get an early start for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, where several of my favorite hikes are located.

There are no hotels or lodges inside Rocky Mountain National Park, so most visitors stay in gateway communities such as Estes Park or Grand Lake.

If you prefer camping, Rocky Mountain National Park also has developed campgrounds. Reservations can fill well in advance, so this is something I would book early.

IMPORTANT: Rocky Mountain National Park Timed Entry Reservations

Do NOT skip this part when planning your trip! For 2026, Rocky Mountain National Park is using two different timed-entry reservations.

Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road

This is the reservation I would prioritize for this itinerary. It includes the Bear Lake Road Corridor AND the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park.

In 2026, this reservation is required to enter the Bear Lake Road Corridor between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from May 22 through October 18.

That matters because Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake and several of the other places in this guide are accessed from this area.

Regular Timed Entry

The regular timed-entry reservation gives you access to most of Rocky Mountain National Park except Bear Lake Road.

For 2026, it is required between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. from May 22 through October 12.

Timed-entry reservations cost a $2 processing fee, and additional reservations are released at 7 p.m. Mountain Time the night before the desired arrival date. Those can go quickly, so I would not make that your primary plan.

Road Trip Queen Tip: If you know your dates, reserve your timed entry as soon as your booking window opens.

My Favorite Rocky Mountain National Park Fall Hikes

You do NOT have to be an extreme hiker to see incredible scenery in Rocky Mountain National Park. One of the reasons I love the Bear Lake area is that you can see multiple alpine lakes along the same trail system.

Nymph Lake

Nymph Lake is your first major stop when hiking from Bear Lake toward Dream and Emerald Lakes.

According to the National Park Service, Nymph Lake is approximately 0.5 mile one way from Bear Lake, with about 225 feet of elevation gain.

It’s a beautiful introduction to the trail, but keep going. It gets even better.

Dream Lake

Next up is Dream Lake, and this is one you definitely don’t want to miss. Dream Lake sits approximately 1.1 miles one way from the Bear Lake Trailhead, with about 425 feet of elevation gain.

The combination of water and dramatic mountain peaks makes this one of those classic Rocky Mountain National Park views.

Emerald Lake

Continue past Dream Lake to reach Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is approximately 1.8 miles one way from Bear Lake, with about 605 feet of elevation gain.

Instead of treating Nymph, Dream and Emerald as three separate hikes, I recommend doing them together.

You get three gorgeous alpine lakes on one hike, which makes this one of my favorite ways to spend a morning in RMNP.

Lake Haiyaha

Want to add another spectacular alpine lake? Head to Lake Haiyaha. From Bear Lake, the NPS lists Lake Haiyaha at approximately 2.1 miles one way with 745 feet of elevation gain.

The huge boulders surrounding the water make this lake feel completely different from Dream or Emerald. If you have the time and energy, add it to your Bear Lake hiking day.

Alberta Falls

Another must-see is Alberta Falls. From the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, Alberta Falls is approximately 0.8 mile one way, with about 160 feet of elevation gain.

It’s a great option if you want a relatively short hike with a big payoff.

Depending on how much hiking you want to do, you can combine Alberta Falls with other destinations in the Bear Lake/Glacier Gorge area or give it its own outing.

Don’t Skip the Scenic Drives

You could spend your entire trip hiking, but don’t. Some of my favorite memories from our fall trip came from simply driving through Rocky Mountain National Park. Roll down the windows, take your time and watch the landscape change around you. The golden aspens against the dark green evergreens and mountain peaks are gorgeous.

And keep your eyes open for wildlife!

Wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park

Fall is an especially exciting time for wildlife viewing because it coincides with the elk rut. You may hear bull elk bugling across the meadows, especially around dawn and dusk. We also spotted deer right along the road surrounded by fall foliage, which was one of those completely unplanned moments that made the trip even better.

Always give wildlife plenty of space. Never approach or feed animals, even if they appear calm.

Trail Ridge Road

If conditions allow, add Trail Ridge Road to your itinerary. This famous scenic road climbs into the alpine tundra and offers completely different scenery from the lower elevations of the park. But there’s an important catch when visiting in fall: weather.

Snow and ice can cause temporary closures of Trail Ridge Road even in September, so don’t build your entire itinerary around it without checking conditions first. I recommend checking the official park conditions the morning you plan to drive it.

A 5-Day Dallas to Rocky Mountain National Park Fall Road Trip

Here’s how I would structure the trip if you’re driving from Dallas.

DAY 1: Dallas → Estes Park

Hit the road early and make the drive to Colorado. Once you arrive in Estes Park, check into your hotel or cabin, grab dinner and get some sleep. Don’t over-plan your first evening. You’ll want your energy for an early morning in the park.

DAY 2: Bear Lake + Nymph Lake + Dream Lake + Emerald Lake

This is your BIG alpine-lake day. Start early and head toward Bear Lake.

Hike:

  • Bear Lake
  • Nymph Lake
  • Dream Lake
  • Emerald Lake

Take your time at each lake and enjoy the scenery rather than treating the hike like a race. If you’re visiting during peak fall color, leave extra time for photo stops throughout the day.

DAY 3: Alberta Falls + Scenic Driving + Wildlife

Start with Alberta Falls. After your hike, give yourself a less structured afternoon. Drive through the park, stop at overlooks, look for fall color and keep an eye out for wildlife. This is one of those destinations where you don’t need every hour scheduled. Sometimes the best part is simply seeing where the road takes you.

DAY 4: Lake Haiyaha + Trail Ridge Road

If your legs are ready for another hike, make Lake Haiyaha your morning destination. Afterward, check the weather and road conditions. If Trail Ridge Road is open and conditions are good, spend the afternoon exploring the higher elevations.

If weather shuts down your plans, use this as an extra Estes Park or lower-elevation park day instead.

DAY 5: Estes Park → Dallas

Grab breakfast or coffee, enjoy one last mountain view and start the drive home. And immediately start wondering when you can come back.

Only Have 4 Days?

You can still make it work.

I would combine Alberta Falls with your Bear Lake hiking day, then use your second full day for Lake Haiyaha, scenic driving, wildlife viewing and Trail Ridge Road if conditions cooperate.

It will be a faster-paced trip, but you’ll still experience many of the highlights.

What to Pack for Rocky Mountain National Park in the Fall

Colorado mountain weather can change FAST, so layers are essential.

I recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
  • Warm jacket
  • Layers
  • Rain jacket
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Plenty of water
  • Hiking snacks
  • Small daypack
  • Portable phone charger
  • Camera
  • Offline maps

Don’t depend on having cell service inside the park. The National Park Service specifically warns visitors that many areas have no service. There are also no gas stations inside RMNP, so fill up before entering the park.

Tips Before You Go

  • Start early. Popular trailheads and parking areas can get busy.
  • Download your maps ahead of time. Cell service is unreliable inside the park.
  • Pack layers. A beautiful sunny morning can turn into a cold afternoon surprisingly quickly.
  • Check conditions every morning. This is especially important if you’re planning to drive Trail Ridge Road.
  • Don’t forget your timed entry reservation. If Bear Lake is part of your itinerary, make sure you understand the separate Bear Lake Road requirements.
  • Give yourself flexibility. Mountain weather doesn’t care about your itinerary. Have a Plan B.
  • Leave room for spontaneous stops. Some of the best fall views aren’t necessarily the ones you planned.

Is Rocky Mountain National Park Worth the Drive from Dallas?

For me, absolutely.

If you love mountain hikes, alpine lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, scenic drives and fall color, Rocky Mountain National Park packs an incredible amount into one destination. Yes, it’s a longer road trip from Texas. But that’s exactly what Road Trip Queen is about.

You don’t always have to get on an airplane to have an incredible vacation. Sometimes you just need a full tank of gas, a few days off and a road pointing toward the mountains.

Save this guide for your next fall adventure!

Bucket List Road Trip Destinations for 2024

Posted in Road TrippingTagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Leave a comment

If you want to explore more of the United States, check out these six bucket list road trip destinations for 2024! We traveled to each of these destinations over the past year or so, and these are the top places that I would recommend to anyone needing a little road trip inspiration.

Ouray, Colorado

Ouray might be my favorite destination in Colorado! My first visit was this past August. I truly fell in love with the landscape and the vibe of this entire mountain town.

Lake Haiyaha, Colorado

Lake Haiyaha is a stunning lake in Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado. You can access this trail in the Bear Lake Corridor of the Park. This is a moderate to challenging hike because it is uphill for a bit and then there’s a rock scramble to the lake. It was so much fun… and so much easier to hike down!

  • Be sure to get Bear Lake Corridor permits from May – October
  • Stay at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park
  • Have brunch and mimosas at MollyB’s
  • Pack a picnic for lunch and views at the lake

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

Driftwood Beach is a unique little gem found in Jekyll Island, Georgia. I traveled there last summer and knew I had to explore the driftwood along the beach before returning home. This is not the best beach for swimming, but it’s amazing for exploring, climbing, and photographing!

Natural Bridges Viewpoints, Oregon

The entire Oregon coast is a dreamy road trip adventure! We made the trip from the Redwoods in California up to Cannon Beach, Oregon. That is one of my favorite trips to date. We stopped at the Natural Bridges Viewpoint off the Samual H. Boardman Scenic Corridor in Brookings, OR. This was a great place to stop and stretch our legs. You can view the natural bridges from the viewing area near the parking lot. But we went ahead and did the hike down to the bridges and walked over them! It was tough coming back up, but easy enough for my boys to do it with us and they were only 7 and 10 at the time!

  • Stay on the marked trails if you want to get a closer look
  • Watch for wildlife – we saw a seal swimming in the water
  • Stay at the Beachfront Inn
  • Get breakfast at Matttie’s Pancake House
  • Brookings is a great place to eat, shop, and hike

Grand Tetons National Park

The Grand Tetons are indeed grand! If you want a fun place to explore, you can make the Grand Tetons a stop on your road trip to Yellowstone or you can make it an entire vacation destination. What I loved about our road trip to the Tetons was that the views on the drive through Wyoming were stunning and we saw so much wildlife!

Ice Lake, Colorado

Ice Lake near Silverton, Colorado is the most outrageous lake I have ever seen. The views up to the lake were amazing. We encountered streams, waterfalls, and wildflowers along the trek. It was extremely tough for us flatlanders, but we made it. The views are one hundred percent worth the effort!

  • Stay in Durango for more dining and nightlife options
  • Take the Million Dollar Highway
  • Stop in Silverton for lunch and shopping
  • Be prepared for the 8.5 mile hike – pack plenty of food and water

If you’d like to see videos of these destinations, check out my Instagram!

Remember to plan ahead, stay safe on the road, and enjoy the journey as much as the destinations you’ll encounter along the way!
