One of my favorite things about living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is how many completely different destinations we can reach on a road trip. Within a few hours, you can trade the city for waterfalls, lakes, cabins tucked into the forest, mountain trails, wildlife and even one of the most incredible cave systems in the country.

Whether you want an easy two-night escape or you’re willing to make a longer drive to take full advantage of the three-day weekend, here are 8 Labor Day weekend road trips from Dallas worth adding to your list.

Labor Day Tip: Holiday weekends are BUSY. Make lodging, camping and park reservations as early as possible, and always check current park conditions before leaving home.

1. Turner Falls Park, Oklahoma

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 130 miles
Drive Time: About 2 hours
Location: Davis, Oklahoma
Best For: Waterfalls, swimming, families and an easy weekend getaway

If you want maximum vacation vibes without spending half of your weekend in the car, Turner Falls is hard to beat.

The main attraction at Turner Falls Park is the 77-foot waterfall cascading into a natural swimming area in the Arbuckle Mountains. But don’t make the mistake of taking a picture of the waterfall and immediately leaving—the park has plenty to keep you busy for the day.

Things to Do at Turner Falls

• See the 77-foot Turner Falls
• Swim and wade in Honey Creek
• Explore the park’s natural caves
• Hike the trails
• Explore the stone structures around Collings Castle
• Pack a picnic
• Camp inside the park

Where to Stay

You can turn Turner Falls into an overnight trip by camping or booking one of the accommodations inside the park. Another option is staying nearby in Davis or Sulphur.

For a full weekend, consider pairing Turner Falls with the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur.

Know Before You Go

Turner Falls gets extremely busy during summer weekends and holidays, so Labor Day weekend is not the time to wing it. Purchase admission ahead of time and arrive early.

Water conditions can also affect which swimming areas are open, so check current conditions before making the drive.

Road Trip Queen Tip: If your main goal is photos and swimming, arrive as early as possible. You’ll have a much better experience before the biggest crowds arrive.

2. Lost Forest Cabins + Sam Houston National Forest, Texas

Location: Richards, Texas
Best For: Cabins, couples, families, nature and a relaxing weekend

Want a Labor Day getaway where the accommodation is part of the adventure? This is it.

Lost Forest Cabins is tucked into a private forest near Sam Houston National Forest, making it feel surprisingly remote considering how manageable the drive is from Dallas.

Instead of creating a packed itinerary, this is the trip where I’d slow down and actually enjoy where I’m staying.

The property sits on 38 private wooded acres and offers activities including:

Kayaks and paddleboards are available on the property, and the cabins include full kitchens, private decks, grills, Wi-Fi and other amenities that make it easy to settle in for the weekend.

Explore Sam Houston National Forest

If you want to venture beyond the property, spend part of your weekend exploring Sam Houston National Forest.

Options include hiking, biking and exploring the forest’s Multiple-Use Trail system. Some designated trailheads require a recreation fee, so check the specific area you plan to visit before heading out.

Stay right at Lost Forest Cabins in Richards, Texas.

This is one destination where I wouldn’t substitute a generic hotel—the secluded cabin experience is what makes this road trip special.

Perfect Labor Day Itinerary

Friday: Drive from Dallas → check into cabin → fire pit evening
Saturday: Morning forest activities → kayaking/paddleboarding → relax at cabin
Sunday: Explore Sam Houston National Forest → return to cabin
Monday: Slow morning → drive back to Dallas

3. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 200 miles
Drive Time: About 3–3.5 hours
Location: Near Lawton and Medicine Park, Oklahoma
Best For: Wildlife, mountain scenery, hiking and photography

The Wichita Mountains are one of my favorite examples of a place that simply doesn’t look like it should be this close to Dallas.

The landscape combines rugged granite mountains, prairie, lakes and roaming wildlife—and it’s completely different from the scenery you’ll find around DFW.

Things to Do in the Wichita Mountains

• Drive Mount Scott Road
• Look for free-roaming bison and longhorn
• Visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
• Hike among the granite mountains
• Explore Jed Johnson Lake
• Kayak or fish
• Visit nearby Medicine Park
• Stop at scenic overlooks

The refuge itself does not charge an entrance fee.

IMPORTANT FOR LABOR DAY 2026

As of August 2026, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has temporary extreme-heat hiking restrictions in place.

Hiking is currently allowed from sunrise until 10:00 a.m. only, and hikers must be off trails and the Mount Scott roadway by 10:00 a.m. Roads remain open to vehicles and bicycles, and fishing, picnicking and Doris Campground continue during their normal operating hours.

Check the refuge website immediately before your trip in case these restrictions change.

Where to Stay

You have several good options:

Medicine Park: Best for charm and being close to the refuge.

Lawton: Best if you want more hotels, restaurants and conveniences.

Doris Campground: Best if you want to camp inside the refuge. Camping requires reservations.

4. Lake Conroe, Texas

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 200–220 miles
Drive Time: Around 3–3.5 hours
Location: Conroe/Montgomery, Texas
Best For: Lake days, boating, families and groups

If your idea of the perfect Labor Day involves swimsuits rather than hiking boots, head to Lake Conroe.

The lake covers approximately 22,000 acres with 157 miles of shoreline, so there are plenty of ways to build an entire weekend around the water.

• Rent a boat or pontoon
• Jet ski
• Swim
• Kayak or paddleboard
• Go fishing
• Spend a day cruising the lake
• Eat at a waterfront restaurant
• Relax at your resort or vacation rental
• Explore downtown Conroe

You don’t need to own a boat to enjoy Lake Conroe—boat rentals and fishing guides are available around the lake.

Where to Stay

For the best experience, I’d look for:

• A waterfront vacation rental
• A resort on the lake
• A hotel around Montgomery or Conroe

If you’re traveling with another family or a group, a lake house with water access could easily turn this into one of the most relaxing trips on the list.

Saturday: Full boat/lake day

5. Inks Lake State Park, Texas

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 220 miles
Drive Time: Around 3.5 hours
Location: Burnet, Texas
Best For: Swimming, kayaking, camping and Texas Hill Country scenery

If I were picking one Texas state park for an end-of-summer lake weekend, Inks Lake State Park would be high on my list.

The biggest draw is Devil’s Waterhole, a beautiful section of the lake surrounded by pink granite rock formations.

Things to Do at Inks Lake

• Swim at Devil’s Waterhole
• Kayak
• Paddleboard
• Hike
• Fish
• Camp
• Explore the rocky shoreline
• Watch the sunset over the lake

The park is open daily and currently charges $7 per adult age 13 and older; children 12 and younger enter free.

RESERVE BEFORE YOU GO

Inks Lake frequently reaches capacity, and Texas Parks & Wildlife highly recommends making reservations for both camping and day use.

For Labor Day weekend, I would consider a reservation essential rather than optional.

Where to Stay

Option 1: Camp inside Inks Lake State Park

The park has campsites with electricity as well as other camping options.

Option 2: Stay in a park cabin

Inks Lake has 22 basic cabins. They sleep four and currently start at $55 per night plus entrance fees. There is a two-night minimum over Labor Day.

Option 3: Stay in Burnet or Marble Falls

This is a good option if camping isn’t your thing.

Make It a Hill Country Weekend

If you have extra time, nearby attractions include:

• Longhorn Cavern State Park
• Marble Falls
• Buchanan Dam
• Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

6. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 330 miles
Drive Time: Around 5.5–6 hours
Location: Morrilton, Arkansas
Best For: Waterfalls, hiking, cabins and mountain scenery

If you’re willing to drive a little farther, Petit Jean State Park feels like a true vacation without requiring a flight.

Petit Jean was Arkansas’s first state park and combines waterfalls, overlooks, forests, interesting rock formations and historic Civilian Conservation Corps architecture.

Don’t Miss Cedar Falls

The star attraction is Cedar Falls, which drops approximately 95 feet into Cedar Creek Canyon.

The hike down into the canyon is beautiful, but remember that you’ll have to climb back out. Bring water and plan for heat over Labor Day weekend.

Waterfall flow depends heavily on recent rainfall, so don’t assume Cedar Falls will look the same year-round.

Park Cabins: Many sit along the bluff overlooking the canyon, and several historic cabins were built by the CCC.

Camping: Available year-round.

Yurts: Another fun option for families.

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 450 miles
Drive Time: Around 7–8 hours

Best For: Serious hiking, mountains, national parks and adventure

Yes, Texas has real mountains—and Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the highest natural point in the state.

This is the trip for travelers who would rather spend Labor Day climbing a mountain than floating on a lake.

• Hike Guadalupe Peak
• Explore Devil’s Hall
• Visit McKittrick Canyon
• See the historic Frijole Ranch area
• Walk the Pinery Trail
• Stargaze

Guadalupe Peak

Guadalupe Peak rises to 8,751 feet, making it the highest natural point in Texas.

This is a strenuous hike and should not be treated like a casual sightseeing stop. Start early, bring significantly more water than you think you’ll need and check weather and trail conditions before starting.

For families or travelers who don’t want a strenuous all-day hike, choose one of the park’s shorter trails instead.

Entrance Fee

The current entrance fee is $10 per person age 16 and older, valid for up to seven consecutive days.

America the Beautiful passes are accepted.

Where to Stay

Guadalupe Mountains is remote, so planning lodging ahead matters.

Options include:

• Pine Springs Campground
• Camping within the park
• Hotels in Carlsbad, New Mexico
• Lodging around Whites City

If you’re combining Guadalupe Mountains with Carlsbad Caverns, Carlsbad makes a convenient home base.

Important Tip

Do not expect lots of restaurants, gas stations and conveniences immediately outside Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Fill your tank, pack food and carry plenty of water before heading into this area.

Road Trip Queen Tip: If you’re driving all the way from Dallas, don’t visit Guadalupe Mountains by itself. Pair it with Carlsbad Caverns and turn the drive into a mini national park road trip.

8. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 460–480 miles
Drive Time: Around 7.5–8 hours
Location: Carlsbad, New Mexico
Best For: Caves, national parks, families and bucket-list experiences

If you’ve never been inside Carlsbad Caverns National Park, add this one to your list.

It’s almost impossible to understand the scale of the cave until you’re standing inside it.

What to Do at Carlsbad Caverns

• Walk down through the Natural Entrance
• Explore the Big Room
• Take a ranger-guided cave tour if available
• Explore the Chihuahuan Desert above ground
• Stay for the evening Bat Flight Program

YOU NEED A RESERVATION

Carlsbad Cavern requires a timed-entry reservation to enter the cavern.

The reservation currently costs $1 per person, and you’ll also need to pay the park entrance fee when you arrive unless your admission is covered by an eligible park pass.

The standard cavern entrance fee is currently $15 per person.

Make your timed-entry reservation well before Labor Day weekend.

Don’t Miss the Bat Flight!

Labor Day falls during bat-flight season.

Carlsbad Caverns currently offers a free evening Bat Flight Program from April through October. No reservation is required, and seating is first come, first served.

You’ll hear a ranger presentation and then watch Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the cavern around sunset.

Important: Electronic devices, including phones and cameras, are not allowed during the Bat Flight Program. Put the phone away and enjoy this one!

Where to Stay

Carlsbad, New Mexico: Best for hotels, restaurants and convenience.

Whites City: Closest to the national park.

You can also camp in the region, but make reservations early for a holiday weekend.

BONUS: Combine Guadalupe Mountains + Carlsbad Caverns

If you’re going to drive eight hours from Dallas, this is what I’d do.

The parks are close enough that combining them makes much more sense than making two separate road trips.
