8 Incredible New Mexico Road Trips from Dallas, Texas

If you think New Mexico is nothing but desert, you’re in for a surprise.

New Mexico is one of our favorite states to road trip from Dallas because every part of the state feels completely different. You can hike through a slot canyon, explore enormous underground caves, climb ladders to ancient cliff dwellings, sled down white gypsum dunes, wander through historic adobe streets, or escape to the mountains—all in the same state.

We’ve road-tripped to every destination on this list, and these are eight New Mexico destinations I think are absolutely worth the drive from Dallas.

Whether you’re looking for a long weekend, a family road trip, hiking and outdoor adventures, or a longer New Mexico vacation, save this guide for your next trip west!

1. Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

Drive time from Dallas: About 10 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: Hiking, slot canyons, unique landscapes and outdoor adventure
Recommended trip length: 2–3 days when combined with Santa Fe

Tent Rocks is easily one of the most unique places we’ve explored in New Mexico.

The landscape is filled with cone-shaped rock formations created by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, but the real adventure is hiking between the towering walls of the slot canyon.

  • Walk the Cave Loop Trail
  • Explore the incredible cone-shaped tent rock formations
  • Photograph the slot canyon
  • Learn about the area’s geology
  • Combine your visit with Santa Fe

Know Before You Go

This is one destination where you absolutely need to plan ahead.

As of September 2026, Tent Rocks requires advance reservations and is open Thursday through Monday. Visitors must first check in at the Cochiti Visitor Center and then follow a pilot vehicle into the monument. The monument also has seasonal and cultural closures. 

The BLM currently lists the Cave Loop and Slot Canyon trails as open, although the Veterans’ Memorial Overlook is temporarily closed following monsoon impacts. Always check current conditions before your trip.

2. Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Drive time from Dallas: About 8 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: Caves, hiking, geology and families
Recommended trip length: 2–3 days

Carlsbad Caverns is one of those places that photographs simply cannot capture.

Hidden beneath the Chihuahuan Desert is a cave system containing more than 119 known caves. Once you descend underground, the sheer size of the chambers and formations is incredible. 

Things to Do at Carlsbad Caverns

  • Explore the Big Room
  • Hike down through the Natural Entrance
  • Take a ranger-guided cave tour when available
  • See stalactites, stalagmites and other cave formations
  • Walk the above-ground desert trails
  • Attend the seasonal Bat Flight Program

The Big Room Trail is about 1.25 miles and generally takes around 1½ hours. If your family wants more adventure, take the Natural Entrance Trail into the cavern. It drops approximately 750 feet—the equivalent of walking down about 75 stories. 

Reservations

Carlsbad Caverns currently requires a timed-entry reservation to enter the cavern. Your reservation secures your entry time; you’ll still need the appropriate park entrance pass. 

Road Trip Queen Tip: Don’t rush this one. Give yourself plenty of time underground. The Big Room is enormous, and you’ll want to stop constantly to look at the formations.

3. Bandelier National Monument

Drive time from Dallas: About 12.5 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: Hiking, history, cliff dwellings and families
Recommended trip length: 1 day, or 3–4 days when combined with Santa Fe and Tent Rocks

Bandelier is one of my favorite combinations of hiking and history in New Mexico.

The monument protects an incredible landscape filled with evidence of Ancestral Pueblo communities. Here, you’re not just looking at ruins from a distance—you can walk among archaeological sites and climb wooden ladders into some of the small human-carved alcoves known as cavates.

Things to Do at Bandelier

  • Hike the Pueblo Loop Trail
  • See Tyuonyi Pueblo
  • Climb ladders into cavates
  • See Long House
  • Explore Frijoles Canyon
  • Visit Alcove House when open
  • Stop at the visitor center to learn more about the Ancestral Pueblo people

The Pueblo Loop Trail is approximately 1.4 miles and passes several of the monument’s major archaeological sites. Most visitors spend about 45 minutes to an hour on the loop, although you’ll probably want more time if you stop frequently. 

For more adventure, continue to Alcove House. It’s located about 140 feet above the canyon floor and is reached using four wooden ladders and stone stairs. Conditions can occasionally close the ladders, particularly during icy winter weather, so check before your visit. 

Parking and Shuttle Information

Bandelier operates seasonal shuttle service during busy periods. For 2026, shuttle operations run intermittently through October 14, and the shuttle is generally not mandatory unless canyon parking lots fill.

Road Trip Queen Tip: This is a fantastic place for families with older kids who enjoy a little adventure. The ladders make the history feel much more interactive than simply walking past ruins.

4. Ruidoso

Drive time from Dallas: About 8.5 hours
Best time to visit: Year-round
Best for: Mountains, hiking, lakes, wildlife and a relaxing getaway
Recommended trip length: 3–4 days

Need a mountain escape? Put Ruidoso on your list.

Ruidoso feels completely different from many of New Mexico’s desert destinations. You’ll find pine-covered mountains, lakes, hiking trails, wildlife and a walkable Midtown area.

We’ve visited when there was snow on the ground, and it makes such a fun family getaway.

Things to Do in Ruidoso

  • Explore Grindstone Lake
  • Hike the Grindstone Lake trail system
  • Walk around Midtown Ruidoso
  • Look for deer and elk
  • Visit Alto Lake
  • Explore Lincoln National Forest
  • Ski at Ski Apache during ski season
  • Rent a cabin and simply enjoy the mountain scenery

Grindstone Lake is especially great for families. Depending on the season, you can hike, bike, fish, kayak, paddleboard or simply enjoy the scenery. 

Road Trip Queen Tip: Rent a cabin instead of a traditional hotel. One of my favorite parts of a Ruidoso trip is having a cozy home base in the mountains.

5. White Sands National Park

Drive time from Dallas: About 9 hours
Best time to visit: Fall, winter or spring
Best for: Unique landscapes, sledding, sunsets and photography
Recommended trip length: 1–2 days

White Sands National Park looks like snow in the middle of the desert—but those brilliant white hills are actually gypsum dunes.

It’s one of the most unusual landscapes in the Southwest and an especially fun stop with kids because you can actually sled down the dunes.

Things to Do at White Sands

  • Drive Dunes Drive
  • Go sledding on the dunes
  • Hike one of the park’s marked trails
  • Walk across the gypsum dunes
  • Stay for sunset
  • Visit the historic visitor center
  • Take LOTS of pictures

Dunes Drive travels eight miles from the visitor center into the dunefield, making it a 16-mile round trip. Give yourself much longer than the approximately 45 minutes it takes to simply drive it—you’ll want to get out and explore. 

Sledding is allowed in designated areas away from roads and vegetation, and plastic snow saucers work well on the gypsum.

If possible, stay for sunset. The light completely changes the appearance of the dunes, and the park offers ranger-led Sunset Strolls on select days when staffing and weather permit. 

White Sands Tip

Summer can be extremely hot. The National Park Service advises against beginning a hike when temperatures are at or above 85°F, so cooler months are much more comfortable for exploring. 

White Sands can also experience temporary closures related to nearby White Sands Missile Range testing, so check current park conditions before driving out. 

6. Santa Fe

Drive time from Dallas: About 9.5 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: Food, history, architecture, art and couples/family trips
Recommended trip length: 2–3 days

Santa Fe is completely different from the outdoor-heavy destinations on this list, and that’s exactly why I love adding it to a New Mexico road trip.

The adobe architecture makes you immediately feel like you’ve gone somewhere completely different from Texas.

Things to Do in Santa Fe

  • Explore the historic Santa Fe Plaza
  • Walk Canyon Road
  • Visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
  • Visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum
  • Explore local galleries
  • Shop for locally made goods
  • Try New Mexican cuisine
  • Visit Meow Wolf
  • Wander the adobe-lined streets around downtown

The historic Plaza makes a great starting point because restaurants, galleries, museums and historic buildings are concentrated around downtown. 

Art lovers should also make time for Canyon Road. The half-mile stretch is home to more than 100 galleries housed largely in historic adobe buildings.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Don’t treat Santa Fe like a quick roadside stop. Stay at least two nights and give yourself time to wander without an itinerary.

7. Shiprock

Drive time from Dallas: About 12 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: Scenic views, photography, desert landscapes and Navajo culture
Recommended trip length: Add it to a Four Corners/northwestern New Mexico road trip

Rising dramatically from the desert floor, Shiprock is one of New Mexico’s most recognizable natural landmarks.

It’s especially striking because the surrounding landscape is so open—the massive rock formation seems to rise out of nowhere.

Shiprock, or Tsé Bitʼaʼí, is sacred to the Navajo people and is located on Navajo Nation land. This isn’t a place to treat like a traditional hiking attraction.

What to Do Around Shiprock

  • View Shiprock from public roads
  • Photograph the formation from a respectful distance
  • Explore northwestern New Mexico
  • Learn about Navajo history and culture
  • Combine the stop with Aztec Ruins
  • Continue toward the Four Corners region

Important: Respect all posted restrictions, remain on public roads and do not attempt to climb Shiprock or enter restricted areas.

Road Trip Queen Tip: Shiprock works best as part of a larger northern New Mexico/Four Corners trip rather than as a stand-alone weekend trip from Dallas.

8. Aztec Ruins National Monument

Drive time from Dallas: About 12 hours
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best for: History, archaeology and cultural sites
Recommended trip length: Half day as part of a northwestern New Mexico road trip

Don’t let the name confuse you—Aztec Ruins was actually built by Ancestral Pueblo people, not the Aztecs.

The settlement developed from the late 1000s through the late 1200s and included large public buildings and ceremonial structures.

Things to Do at Aztec Ruins

  • Walk the Aztec West self-guided trail
  • Enter the reconstructed Great Kiva
  • Walk through original rooms
  • See remarkably preserved ancient masonry
  • Visit the museum
  • Learn about Ancestral Pueblo culture
  • Walk toward the Animas River

The self-guided trail is only about a half mile, making this an easy stop to incorporate into a larger road trip. You’ll walk through original rooms and enter the reconstructed Great Kiva. 

Road Trip Queen Tip: Pair Aztec Ruins with Shiprock. They’re both in northwestern New Mexico and make much more sense together than trying to drive all the way from Dallas for only one stop.

How I Would Turn These Into New Mexico Road Trips

You definitely don’t need to try to see all eight destinations on one trip. New Mexico is much bigger than it looks on a map!

For a Southern New Mexico Road Trip, combine Carlsbad Caverns + Ruidoso + White Sands. This would be my choice for a family trip because you get three completely different experiences—caves, mountains and dunes.

For a Northern New Mexico Road Trip, combine Santa Fe + Tent Rocks + Bandelier. This is probably the best combination if you want hiking, history, food, culture and some of New Mexico’s most unusual scenery.

For a Northwestern New Mexico Road Trip, combine Aztec Ruins + Shiprock, then continue exploring the Four Corners region if you have more time.

Best Time to Take a New Mexico Road Trip

For most of these destinations, spring and fall are my favorite seasons.

New Mexico’s elevation changes dramatically from one destination to another, so don’t assume the weather will be the same across the state. You can have warm desert temperatures in one part of your trip and cold mountain weather somewhere else.

Spring: Great for hiking and comfortable temperatures, although wind can be a factor.

Summer: Works well for higher-elevation destinations such as Ruidoso and Santa Fe, but southern New Mexico can get extremely hot.

Fall: My overall favorite. Cooler hiking weather and beautiful mountain scenery make this an excellent road-trip season.

Winter: Ruidoso becomes a winter getaway, and southern destinations such as White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns can be much more comfortable than during the heat of summer.

If You Only Have a Long Weekend

Coming from Dallas, I’d choose Carlsbad Caverns, Ruidoso, or a Carlsbad + Ruidoso combination.

For Santa Fe, Bandelier and Tent Rocks, I’d want at least three or four nights because you’re already spending a significant amount of time driving.

And for Shiprock and Aztec Ruins, I’d save them for a longer New Mexico or Four Corners road trip.

New Mexico Road Trip Tips

Bring more water than you think you’ll need, especially when hiking. New Mexico’s dry climate and higher elevations can sneak up on you.

Download offline maps before heading into more remote areas because cell service isn’t guaranteed.

Always check official park or monument websites shortly before your trip. Hours, trail conditions, reservation requirements, weather closures and access can change.

Make reservations early when they’re required—especially for Tent Rocks and Carlsbad Caverns.

And don’t underestimate the elevation. Santa Fe sits around 7,000 feet above sea level, and several destinations on this list are much higher than Dallas. Give yourself time to adjust and take it easy if needed.

Which New Mexico Road Trip Would I Choose?

You really can’t go wrong, but each area offers something completely different.

Want caves + mountains + dunes? Head south for Carlsbad, Ruidoso and White Sands.

Want hiking + history + culture? Head north for Tent Rocks, Bandelier and Santa Fe.

Want lesser-known stops + dramatic desert landscapes? Head northwest toward Aztec Ruins and Shiprock.

That’s what I love about New Mexico—you can keep coming back and have a completely different road trip every time.

6 Incredible Oklahoma Road Trips from Dallas: Waterfalls, Mountains, Caves & More

Oklahoma is SO much more than what you see driving up I-35. From waterfalls and rugged mountains to caves, crystal-clear lakes and roaming bison, there are some seriously underrated adventures just a few hours from Dallas.

And yes—we’ve road-tripped to every single one of these! If you’re looking for an easy weekend getaway from North Texas, these are six Oklahoma road trips worth adding to your list.

1. Turner Falls Park

Davis, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 2–2.5 hours
Recommended Trip: 1–2 days

Turner Falls is one of the easiest Oklahoma road trips from Dallas when you want a lot of adventure without spending your entire weekend in the car.

The star of the park is the beautiful 77-foot Turner Falls, but there’s much more to explore. You can swim, hike, explore caves, check out the ruins of Collings Castle and spend an entire day enjoying the scenery of the Arbuckle Mountains.

  • See the 77-foot waterfall
  • Swim below the falls
  • Explore the caves
  • Hike the trails

Road Trip Queen Tip

Get there early! Turner Falls can get extremely busy during summer weekends.

If swimming is your priority, summer is the obvious choice. If you’d rather hike and explore without the intense Oklahoma heat, I’d choose spring or fall.

This is also an easy destination to pair with other attractions around Davis and the Arbuckle Mountains for a full weekend.

2. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Near Lawton, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 3–3.5 hours
Recommended Trip: 2 days

If someone tells you Oklahoma is flat and boring, take them here.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge feels completely different from what many people picture when they think about Oklahoma. You’ll find rugged granite mountains, lakes, prairie, scenic drives and incredible wildlife.

And yes—there are free-roaming bison!

The refuge encompasses more than 59,000 acres and is also home to longhorn cattle, elk and other wildlife.

Top Things to Do in the Wichita Mountains

  • Look for bison, longhorn and elk
  • Drive up Mount Scott
  • Hike through the granite mountains
  • Stop at the Visitor Center
  • Explore Quanah Parker Lake
  • Visit Jed Johnson Lake
  • Fish or kayak
  • Take a scenic drive
  • Watch the sunset over the mountains

Road Trip Queen Tip

Don’t feel like you have to spend the entire day hiking. Some of our favorite moments here have come from simply driving around and looking for wildlife.

Never approach the bison or longhorn. Give them plenty of space and remember that these are free-roaming animals.

I’d also download your maps before arriving because cell service can be spotty in parts of the refuge.

3. Broken Bow + Beavers Bend State Park

Broken Bow, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 3–3.5 hours
Recommended Trip: 2–3 days

If you want a relaxing weekend getaway that still has plenty of outdoor adventure, head to Broken Bow.

Between Broken Bow Lake, Beavers Bend State Park and Hochatown, you could easily fill an entire long weekend.

The combination of pine forests, clear water, hiking trails, the Mountain Fork River and cozy cabins makes this one of Oklahoma’s most popular getaways—and one of our favorites from Dallas.

Top Things to Do in Broken Bow

  • Explore Beavers Bend State Park
  • Kayak or canoe the Mountain Fork River
  • Rent a boat on Broken Bow Lake
  • Hike through the forest
  • Go trout fishing
  • Visit the Forest Heritage Center

Where to Stay in Broken Bow

This is one destination where I’d absolutely choose a cabin.

There are cabins throughout Broken Bow and Hochatown ranging from cozy little properties for two to huge luxury cabins for families and groups.

You can also stay inside Beavers Bend State Park.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Give yourself at least two nights in Broken Bow if you can.

Unlike some of the shorter trips on this list, Broken Bow is better when you slow down. Spend a full day exploring the lake and state park, then leave some time to actually enjoy your cabin.

4. Robbers Cave State Park

Wilburton, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 3 hours
Recommended Trip: 1–2 days

Robbers Cave State Park combines hiking, caves, rocky scenery and a little Oklahoma outlaw history.

The park sits among the wooded hills and sandstone cliffs of the Sans Bois Mountains. According to local history, the rugged terrain was once used as a hideout by outlaws.

Today, it makes a pretty incredible outdoor playground.

I especially love this one as a fall road trip from Dallas.

The combination of rocky cliffs, forest and changing leaves makes Robbers Cave gorgeous when the fall colors arrive.

Wear shoes with good traction if you plan to climb around the cave and rock formations.

5. Natural Falls State Park

Colcord, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 4 hours
Recommended Trip: 1–2 days

Yes, Oklahoma has another 77-foot waterfall!

Natural Falls State Park sits in the beautiful Ozark Highlands near the Oklahoma-Arkansas border, and the landscape here feels completely different from southern and western Oklahoma.

The park’s namesake 77-foot waterfall drops through a rocky, forested ravine and is easily the highlight of a visit.

Can You Swim at Natural Falls?

No. This is one major difference between Natural Falls and Turner Falls.

Swimming is not permitted at Natural Falls State Park.

Come here for the waterfall views, hiking and scenery rather than planning a swimming day.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Because Natural Falls is around four hours from Dallas, I’d make this an overnight trip instead of spending eight hours driving in one day.

I’d especially consider visiting in spring when everything is green or during fall when the surrounding Ozark Highlands begin changing colors.

6. Alabaster Caverns State Park

Freedom, Oklahoma
Drive Time from Dallas: About 5–5.5 hours
Recommended Trip: 2 days

Ready to go underground?

Alabaster Caverns State Park might be the most unexpected Oklahoma road trip on this entire list.

The park is home to one of the largest natural gypsum caves in the world and the only gypsum show cave in the United States.

Instead of simply looking into a cave entrance, you can take a guided tour underground and see the formations up close.

Road Trip Queen Tip

This is the farthest Dallas road trip on the list, so I definitely wouldn’t try to make it a day trip.

Plan to stay overnight and turn it into a western Oklahoma weekend.

If touring the cavern is the main reason for your trip, check the current tour schedule and make reservations before making the long drive from Dallas.

Which Oklahoma Road Trip Should You Choose?

If you only have one night, I’d look at Turner Falls, Wichita Mountains or Robbers Cave.

Want a cabin getaway? Broken Bow is perfect.

Looking for waterfalls? Turner Falls and Natural Falls give you two completely different experiences.

Want mountains, hiking and wildlife? Head straight for the Wichita Mountains.

And if you want something completely unexpected, go underground at Alabaster Caverns.

Oklahoma Road Trip Planning Tips

Start early. Leaving Dallas first thing in the morning gives you much more time to explore once you arrive.

Check park conditions before leaving. Hours, trail access, admission requirements, cave tours and swimming conditions can change.

Make reservations when needed. Popular cabins and campsites can fill quickly, especially during summer and fall weekends.

Download your maps. Cell service can be unreliable in some of Oklahoma’s more remote areas.

Bring plenty of water. Oklahoma summers can get HOT, particularly when you’re hiking.

Pack good shoes. Several of these destinations include rocky, uneven terrain.

Don’t rush every trip. One of the reasons we love road trips is getting to enjoy everything along the way. If the destination is four or five hours from Dallas, make a weekend out of it!

Why Oklahoma Deserves a Spot on Your Road Trip List

One of my favorite things about road-tripping is discovering places that completely change the way you picture a destination.

Oklahoma does exactly that.

Within a few hours of Dallas, you can swim beneath a waterfall, watch bison wander below granite mountains, kayak through a pine forest, climb around sandstone caves, hike into a lush waterfall valley and even head underground into a massive gypsum cavern.

You don’t always need a plane ticket or a full week of PTO to have an incredible adventure.

Sometimes you just need a full tank of gas and an open weekend.

Drive times are approximate and will vary depending on your starting point in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, traffic, stops and route.

1. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

If someone told you that you had to leave Texas to see dramatic red-rock canyon scenery, I’d send them straight to Palo Duro Canyon.

Located in the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo and Canyon, Palo Duro is one of my favorite Texas road trips because the landscape feels completely different from Dallas. You go from North Texas highways to layers of red, orange and rust-colored canyon walls.

Texas Parks & Wildlife says the park has more than 30 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, and you can actually drive down into the canyon. 

Don’t Miss at Palo Duro Canyon

The Lighthouse formation is probably the most recognizable landmark in the park, and hiking to it is one of Palo Duro’s signature experiences.

I’d also make time to simply drive through the canyon. You don’t have to complete a major hike to appreciate this park. Stop at the overlooks, explore some of the shorter trails and stay for golden hour if you can.

How Long Do You Need?

I’d plan 2–3 days for a Dallas-to-Palo-Duro road trip. That gives you enough time to drive up without rushing, spend a full day exploring the park and enjoy the scenery rather than immediately turning around for Dallas.

Texas heat is no joke inside the canyon. If you’re hiking during warmer months, start EARLY and carry plenty of water. Texas Parks & Wildlife specifically warns that the trails can be challenging and recommends planning ahead and bringing plenty of water. 

The park can also reach capacity, so I recommend reserving your day pass before making the drive. 

2. Galveston Island

Want a completely different Texas road trip? Head south to the Gulf Coast.

Galveston gives you the combination of a beach trip + historic getaway + family vacation, which makes it one of the most versatile weekend road trips from Dallas.

Don’t Miss in Galveston

Spend some time on the beach, but don’t make the mistake of thinking Galveston is only about the water.

Walk around The Strand Historic District, visit the historic homes, explore Galveston Island State Park, eat some seafood and catch a sunrise or sunset over the water.

Families can also add the Historic Pleasure Pier, and riding the Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry is another fun experience.

My Galveston must-dos: beach time, The Strand, Galveston Island State Park, Pleasure Pier, historic architecture, seafood, ferry ride and sunrise.

How Long Do You Need?

2–3 nights makes an easy long-weekend trip from Dallas. Add another day if you want plenty of time to relax instead of sightseeing the entire trip.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Don’t skip the historic side of Galveston. The combination of beach + history is what makes the island much more interesting to me than simply driving down for a day at the beach.

3. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

This is the road trip on this list that I’d save for a long weekend or school break rather than a regular two-day weekend.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is way out in West Texas, but that’s part of what makes it special. This is mountain-and-desert Texas—and it looks nothing like Dallas.

There are no roads cutting through the heart of the park, so Guadalupe Mountains is really a hiking destination rather than a traditional drive-through National Park. 

Don’t Miss at Guadalupe Mountains

If you’re an experienced hiker and want the ultimate challenge, Guadalupe Peak takes you to the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet.

This is NOT a casual little hike. The National Park Service lists Guadalupe Peak as a strenuous 8.4-mile round trip with about 3,000 feet of elevation gain, typically requiring six to eight hours. 

For something less intense, consider McKittrick Canyon, Devil’s Hall or Smith Spring. NPS recommends several of these as half-day options. 

My Guadalupe Mountains must-dos: Guadalupe Peak for experienced hikers, McKittrick Canyon, Devil’s Hall, scenic drives and stargazing.

How Long Do You Need?

I’d give this trip at least 3–4 days from Dallas. The drive alone makes trying to squeeze Guadalupe Mountains into a standard weekend difficult.

Better yet, turn it into a bigger West Texas/New Mexico road trip and combine it with Carlsbad Caverns or White Sands.

This is one of those places where preparation matters. Fuel up before reaching the remote areas of West Texas, carry plenty of water and download anything you need before losing service.

4. San Antonio

Not every great Texas road trip needs hiking boots.

San Antonio is one of my favorite choices when we want a road trip that still feels like a vacation but has restaurants, hotels, history and plenty to do.

Don’t Miss in San Antonio

Of course, start with the River Walk and The Alamo, but don’t stop there.

San Antonio’s missions are one of the city’s biggest reasons to venture beyond downtown. The four southern missions—Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada—are connected to the River Walk’s Mission Reach, and the missions are part of Texas’ first UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

My San Antonio must-dos: River Walk, The Alamo, San Antonio Missions, Market Square, great Mexican/Tex-Mex food and exploring downtown.

How Long Do You Need?

You can do San Antonio in 2 nights, but I prefer 3 days so the trip doesn’t feel rushed.

Road Trip Queen Tip

If you’ve already done the River Walk and Alamo on a previous trip, make your next visit about the missions, neighborhoods and food. San Antonio has way more to offer than its two most famous attractions.

5. Monahans Sandhills State Park

This might be the biggest “Wait…THIS is Texas?” destination on the list.

Monahans Sandhills State Park looks almost surreal. Instead of traditional hiking trails, you’re exploring rolling sand dunes in West Texas.

Don’t Miss at Monahans

The best activity here is also the most fun: rent a sand disk and slide down the dunes.

Texas Parks & Wildlife rents sand disks at park headquarters, and there aren’t marked trails through the dunes—you can wander and explore them freely. 

My Monahans must-dos: explore the dunes, sand sledding, walk the dunes, sunset, photography and stargazing.

How Long Do You Need?

I’d make this a 2–3 day road trip, particularly if you’re driving all the way from Dallas.

You can also use Monahans as a stop on a longer West Texas road trip rather than making it your only destination.

Go later in the day for softer light and cooler temperatures. The dunes heat up quickly during summer, which Texas Parks & Wildlife specifically warns visitors about. 

6. Inks Lake State Park

If you’re craving a Hill Country road trip with water, put Inks Lake on your list.

This is a great destination for families because you can combine hiking and scenic views with swimming, paddling and relaxing around the lake.

Don’t Miss at Inks Lake

My first stop would be Devil’s Waterhole.

The short Devil’s Waterhole Nature Trail leads to one of the park’s signature spots, where Spring Creek meets Inks Lake. When Valley Spring Creek is flowing, there can even be a waterfall upstream. 

Inks Lake also has more than 12 miles of trails, kayaking/canoeing opportunities, fishing and several scenic overlooks. 

My Inks Lake must-dos: Devil’s Waterhole, swimming, kayaking, hiking, fishing and sunset.

How Long Do You Need?

Plan 2–3 days. It’s close enough to Dallas for a weekend but far enough away that I’d stay overnight.

Make It a Bigger Road Trip

One of the best things about this area is how much you can combine. Add Longhorn Cavern State Park or another Hill Country stop if you have extra time.

7. Dinosaur Valley State Park

This is one of my favorite family road trips from Dallas because it’s close enough for a day trip but unique enough to feel like you’ve gone somewhere.

And yes—you can actually walk beside dinosaur tracks.

Don’t Miss at Dinosaur Valley

The dinosaur footprints are located in and around the Paluxy River bed. Texas Parks & Wildlife identifies five main track-site areas, with both sauropod and theropod tracks. 

The Paluxy River Trail is an easy 2-mile trail where you can encounter dinosaur tracks, while the park has more than 20 miles of trails overall. 

Other fun spots include Blue Hole, the Main Track Site and the Ballroom Track Site.

My Dinosaur Valley must-dos: dinosaur tracks, Paluxy River, Blue Hole, hiking, swimming when conditions allow and the dinosaur models.

How Long Do You Need?

This one works as a day trip from Dallas, but staying one night around Glen Rose makes it much more relaxing.

Road Trip Queen Tip

This is important: track visibility depends on river conditions. Some tracks can be underwater or obscured, and trails can close because of wet weather. Check current conditions before you leave home. 

The park also frequently reaches capacity and recommends reservations for day use and camping. 

8. Fredericksburg + Enchanted Rock

This is one of my favorite combinations because you get outdoor adventure AND a cute Hill Country town in the same weekend.

Spend part of your trip hiking Enchanted Rock and the rest eating, shopping and exploring Fredericksburg.

Don’t Miss at Enchanted Rock

The classic experience is the Summit Trail.

The trail itself is only about 0.8 mile to the summit, but don’t let that short distance fool you—the climb is challenging and takes you up the massive granite dome. 

For a longer hike, the Loop Trail is about 4.6 miles.

Don’t Miss in Fredericksburg

You can’t miss The Preserve in Fredericksburg—an unforgettable, up-close elephant encounter that will easily be one of the highlights of your trip!

Also, head into town for Main Street, restaurants, shops and the area’s wineries. If you’re visiting during spring, the Hill Country wildflowers make the drive even better.

How Long Do You Need?

2–3 days is perfect.

This is one destination where I would not wing it. Enchanted Rock can reach capacity, and Texas Parks & Wildlife recommends reserving passes in advance; weekends, school breaks and holidays are particularly important. 

9. Caprock Canyons State Park

If you love Palo Duro, don’t overlook Caprock Canyons.

It has beautiful red-rock canyon scenery, but there’s something here that makes the experience completely different:

Bison.

Caprock Canyons is home to the Texas State Bison Herd, and seeing these animals against the rugged Panhandle landscape is unforgettable.

Don’t Miss at Caprock Canyons

For hiking, Eagle Point Trail is a 2-mile moderate trail leading through the transition from plains into canyon country and past a natural bridge.

For something more challenging, Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail climbs about 600 feet and offers some of the park’s best views. 

The larger park and trailway system also gives you access to miles of hiking, biking and horseback-riding routes. 

My Caprock Canyons must-dos: see the bison, Eagle Point Trail, Haynes Ridge, scenic canyon views, Lake Theo, sunset and stargazing.

How Long Do You Need?

I’d plan 2–3 days from Dallas.

Give the bison LOTS of space. These are wild animals, not a roadside petting zoo. Part of what makes Caprock so incredible is seeing them roam in this landscape.

Living in North Texas means we may not have mountains or national parks right outside our front door, but one thing we DO have is access to some pretty incredible road trips.

Our family has spent years road-tripping from Texas, and some of our favorite adventures have started by simply loading up the car in Dallas and driving. We’ve hiked through red-rock canyons, climbed around caves, stood among giant saguaros, explored national parks, chased waterfalls, and driven some of the prettiest roads in the country.

So if you’re wondering where you can road trip from Dallas, Texas, start here.

I put together six of my favorite road trips from Dallas—from easy Oklahoma and Texas weekend getaways to bucket-list adventures through Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

1. Texas Road Trip

Best for: Long weekend to 5 days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 3–8 hours, depending on where you’re headed

Before you even leave Texas, there are some wildly different landscapes to explore.

One of the things I love about Texas road trips is just how different one part of the state can look from another. You can hike through the second-largest canyon system in the United States, jump from rocky cliffs into the water, climb a mountain and slide down giant sand dunes—all without crossing the state line.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

If you’ve never visited Palo Duro Canyon, put it on your Texas bucket list.

Located near Amarillo, Palo Duro is often called the Grand Canyon of Texas, and it’s one of those places that makes you wonder if you’re actually still in Texas.

Spend your time hiking through colorful canyon walls, stopping at scenic overlooks and driving the park road down onto the canyon floor.

Don’t miss: The Lighthouse Trail, scenic overlooks and the drive through the canyon.

Inks Lake State Park

Inks Lake is one of my favorite warm-weather road trips from Dallas.

The big attraction for us is Devil’s Waterhole, where you’ll find beautiful blue water surrounded by pink granite rock formations. Kayaking is a great way to explore the lake, and there are hiking trails throughout the park too.

This is an especially good choice when you want a Texas road trip that combines outdoor adventure with time on the water.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Yes, Texas has mountains!

Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas is home to the highest point in the state and offers a completely different landscape from what most people picture when they think of Texas.

Serious hikers can tackle Guadalupe Peak, but you don’t have to summit the mountain to enjoy this national park. There are shorter hikes, scenic desert landscapes and beautiful mountain views throughout the area.

Bonus: Carlsbad Caverns National Park is close enough that I highly recommend combining the two parks into one trip.

Monahans Sandhills State Park

Imagine enormous rolling sand dunes in the middle of West Texas. That’s Monahans Sandhills.

Bring or rent a sand disk and spend a few hours sliding down the dunes. This makes an especially fun stop when you’re already heading west toward Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns or New Mexico.

How I’d Plan It

You don’t need to combine all four destinations into a single trip. Think of this section as four great Texas road trips from Dallas that can stand alone or be incorporated into a larger West Texas itinerary.

2. Arizona Road Trip

Best for: 5–7 days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 13–16+ hours depending on your first stop
Highlights: Deserts • Red Rocks • National Parks • Epic Views

Arizona is easily one of my favorite states for a road trip because the scenery changes constantly.

You can go from towering saguaros to red-rock mountains to alpine forests to the Grand Canyon, all in one trip.

Saguaro National Park

If you’ve never stood beside a giant saguaro cactus, photos don’t really prepare you for how impressive they are.

Saguaro National Park surrounds Tucson and is divided into two districts. We especially loved the classic Arizona desert scenery here.

Go around sunrise or sunset if you can—the desert light is incredible.

Chiricahua National Monument

This is one of Arizona’s most underrated destinations.

Chiricahua is filled with towering rock formations and hoodoos that make the landscape look almost otherworldly.

The Echo Canyon Loop is a great way to experience the rock formations up close.

Sedona

Sedona absolutely deserves the hype.

The red-rock scenery is gorgeous from practically everywhere in town, and there are hikes for a wide range of ability levels.

Even if you only have one day, take time for a scenic drive, hike and sunset among the red rocks.

Grand Canyon National Park

There’s a reason the Grand Canyon is on so many bucket lists.

No matter how many photos you’ve seen, standing at the rim for the first time is completely different.

Give yourself time to walk along the rim, stop at multiple viewpoints and watch how the colors of the canyon change throughout the day.

Bonus Stop: Canyon de Chelly National Monument

If your route allows, Canyon de Chelly is another incredible Arizona stop and one that many Southwest itineraries overlook.

The canyon’s scenery is spectacular, but its cultural and historical significance makes it especially worth visiting.

How I’d Plan It

For a weeklong Arizona road trip from Texas, I’d build a route through Tucson/Saguaro → Chiricahua → Sedona → Grand Canyon, adding Canyon de Chelly if you have enough time.

3. Oklahoma Road Trip

Best for: 2–4 days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 2.5–4 hours for many of these destinations
Highlights: Mountains • Waterfalls • Caves • Wildlife

Oklahoma is one of my favorite answers when someone asks me where they can go for a quick road trip from Dallas.

You can leave North Texas and be somewhere that feels completely different within a few hours.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

The Wichita Mountains are one of my favorite easy road trips from Dallas.

Expect rugged mountains, hiking trails, scenic drives and wildlife—including bison and longhorn cattle.

Drive up Mount Scott for incredible views, hike among the rocks and make time to explore the refuge.

Turner Falls Park

Turner Falls is home to a 77-foot waterfall and is an easy getaway from Dallas.

In warmer weather, the swimming areas make this especially fun for families. You’ll also find caves, trails and the ruins of Collings Castle to explore.

Natural Falls State Park

Head farther northeast and Oklahoma gets surprisingly green.

Natural Falls State Park features a beautiful 77-foot waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. It’s a completely different Oklahoma experience from the Wichita Mountains.

Alabaster Caverns State Park

Here’s another Oklahoma surprise: you can go underground.

Alabaster Caverns State Park is home to a gypsum cave system and makes a really unique addition to an Oklahoma road trip.

How I’d Plan It

I wouldn’t try to combine all four into one rushed weekend because they’re spread across the state.

Instead, use these as building blocks for multiple Oklahoma road trips from Dallas. Wichita Mountains + Turner Falls works particularly well for a shorter trip, while Natural Falls and Alabaster Caverns can anchor separate Oklahoma adventures.

4. New Mexico Road Trip

Best for: 4–7 days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 7–10+ hours depending on your first destination
Highlights: Deserts • Caves • Ancient Landscapes • National Parks

New Mexico might be one of the most underrated road-trip states near Texas.

And it’s not just desert.

Within one road trip you can walk across bright white gypsum dunes, descend deep underground into enormous caverns, explore ancient Pueblo history and hike through unusual volcanic landscapes.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns is one of those places that’s hard to appreciate until you’re actually standing inside it.

The caverns are enormous.

If you’re able, I recommend entering through the Natural Entrance rather than only taking the elevator down. Once inside, explore the Big Room before taking the elevator back to the surface.

White Sands National Park

White Sands looks like snow in the middle of the desert.

Miles of brilliant white gypsum dunes stretch toward the mountains, creating one of the most unusual landscapes in the Southwest.

Bring or buy a sled because sledding down the dunes is part of the fun.

Sunset here is incredible.

Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier combines outdoor adventure with fascinating history.

Trails lead through Frijoles Canyon past ancestral Pueblo structures, cliff dwellings and petroglyphs.

One of the things we loved about Bandelier was that it felt completely different from White Sands and Carlsbad despite being part of the same New Mexico trip.

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

Tent Rocks is another landscape that doesn’t quite look real.

Cone-shaped rock formations rise from the desert, and the area is known for its unique geology and beautiful scenery.

Important: Access, hours and reservation requirements at Tent Rocks have changed over the years, so check current visiting information before building it into your itinerary.

How I’d Plan It

For a larger New Mexico loop from Dallas, consider:

Dallas → Carlsbad Caverns → White Sands → Tent Rocks → Bandelier → Dallas

You could also pair Carlsbad Caverns with nearby Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas.

5. Colorado Road Trip

Best for: 4–7+ days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 10–14+ hours depending on destination
Highlights: Mountains • National Parks • Scenic Drives • Mountain Towns

If we’re talking about road trips that are truly worth the drive from Texas, Colorado has to be on the list.

Colorado gives you the dramatic mountain scenery that we simply don’t have in North Texas—and summer can provide a welcome break from the Texas heat.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is an obvious Colorado bucket-list stop for a reason.

Spend a day driving Trail Ridge Road, look for elk and other wildlife, and choose a hike around Bear Lake or one of the park’s many other trails.

Estes Park makes a convenient base for exploring the park.

Estes Park

Don’t treat Estes Park as just the gateway to RMNP.

Walk downtown, enjoy the mountain views and give yourself time to slow down between adventures.

Ouray

Ouray might be one of my favorite Colorado mountain towns.

Nicknamed the Switzerland of America, it’s surrounded by mountains and waterfalls.

If you’re road-tripping through southwest Colorado, the drive itself becomes part of the experience.

Telluride

Telluride combines a gorgeous mountain setting with one of Colorado’s most recognizable mountain-town experiences.

Ride the gondola, explore downtown and take in the views.

Durango

Durango makes another great base for southwest Colorado, particularly if you’re combining mountain scenery with other destinations in the Four Corners region.

How I’d Plan It

Colorado is another state where I’d choose a region instead of trying to see everything.

For a shorter trip, concentrate on Estes Park + Rocky Mountain National Park.

With a full week, southwest Colorado—Ouray + Telluride + Durango—makes an incredible road trip of its own.

6. Utah Road Trip

Best for: 5–7+ days
Drive time from Dallas: Approximately 14–17+ hours depending on destination
Highlights: National Parks • Red Rocks • Scenic Drives • Incredible Hikes

Utah is the road trip you take when you’re ready to go BIG.

The landscapes are almost ridiculous—in the best possible way.

Utah has five national parks, and each one feels completely different from the others.

Zion National Park

Zion is spectacular from the moment you drive into the park.

Towering canyon walls surround you, and there are hikes ranging from relatively easy walks to bucket-list adventures.

Even simply driving through the area is unforgettable.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos make it unlike anywhere else on this list.

Walk along the rim, but if you’re able, hike down into the amphitheater. Seeing the formations from below gives you an entirely different perspective.

Arches National Park

Arches is home to more than 2,000 documented natural stone arches.

Delicate Arch may be the icon, but there are formations and viewpoints throughout the park worth exploring.

Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands feels enormous and wild.

If you’re staying around Moab, the Island in the Sky district makes it relatively easy to combine Canyonlands with Arches.

Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef sometimes gets overshadowed by Utah’s better-known national parks, which is exactly why I think it deserves a spot on a road trip.

The scenic drives, red-rock formations and relative quiet make it a great addition between Bryce Canyon and the Moab area.

How I’d Plan It

If you have enough time for Utah’s Mighty Five:

Zion → Bryce Canyon → Capitol Reef → Arches → Canyonlands

If you only have 5–7 days including your drive from Texas, I would not try to cram all five parks into the trip. Pick two or three and actually enjoy them.

Which Road Trip From Dallas Should You Choose?

If you only have a weekend, start with Texas or Oklahoma.

If you have 4–5 days, look at New Mexico or one region of Colorado.

If you have a full week, Arizona, Colorado or Utah become much more realistic.

And if you’re looking for the biggest Southwest road-trip adventure, it’s hard to beat Arizona or Utah.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned after years of road trips:

You don’t need two weeks of vacation or a plane ticket to have an incredible adventure.

Sometimes you just need a few days, a full tank of gas and somewhere new to point the car.

Road Trip Tips From a Texas Family Who Actually Drives These Routes

Start early. We often leave Dallas early enough that the first long driving day still gets us somewhere interesting by afternoon or evening.

Don’t judge a road trip only by the final destination. Some of our favorite memories have happened at stops we added along the way.

Build in breathing room. Trying to check off every attraction usually makes a road trip less enjoyable, not more.

Download offline maps. Cell service can disappear quickly in national parks and remote areas of the Southwest.

Check park requirements before leaving. National park reservations, timed-entry systems, road closures and shuttle requirements can change.

Pack for changing weather. Desert temperatures can swing dramatically, and mountain weather can change quickly.

Let the drive be part of the trip. Scenic highways, roadside stops and unexpected detours are part of why we road trip in the first place.

1. Alabaster Caverns State Park – Freedom, Oklahoma

If you want a cave road trip from Dallas that doesn’t require an entire week of vacation, start with Alabaster Caverns State Park.

Located near Freedom in northwestern Oklahoma, Alabaster Caverns is home to one of the largest natural gypsum caves in the world open to the public. Even better, it is the only gypsum show cave in the United States.

This makes it completely different from the limestone caves you may have visited elsewhere.

What to Do at Alabaster Caverns

The main attraction is the guided tour through Alabaster Cavern.

Tours follow a lighted path through the cave while a guide explains the geology and history of the cavern. The temperature underground averages around 55 degrees year-round, making this an especially fun escape during a hot summer road trip.

Daily guided tours currently leave on the hour from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Tours have limited capacity, and reservations are recommended — particularly on holidays and busy weekends.

But here’s where Alabaster gets even more adventurous.

The park also offers wild caving, or spelunking, in caves specifically maintained for that purpose. This is a completely different experience from walking through the main show cave. Expect darkness, dirt, tight spaces and a much more hands-on adventure.

What Else Can You Do?

In addition to the caves, Alabaster Caverns State Park offers:

  • Wildlife watching
  • A playground
  • RV and tent campsites

Road Trip Queen Tip

Bring a light jacket even if you’re visiting in summer. Oklahoma may be scorching above ground while the cavern stays around 55 degrees.

If you’re traveling with kids or you’ve never explored a cave before, I’d start with the regular guided cavern tour before considering wild caving.

2. Carlsbad Caverns National Park – New Mexico

Carlsbad Caverns isn’t just one of my favorite cave road trips from Texas — it’s one of those places you have to see in person to understand how enormous it really is.

Hidden beneath the Chihuahuan Desert are more than 119 known caves.

The star of the park is Carlsbad Cavern, where you can descend below the desert and explore an underground world filled with enormous chambers, stalactites, stalagmites and other formations.

Natural Entrance vs. Elevator

One of the best things about Carlsbad Caverns is that you can choose how adventurous you want your visit to be. For the full experience, take the Natural Entrance Trail into the cavern. Instead of stepping into an elevator and magically appearing underground, you’ll actually hike down through the enormous natural opening of the cave. The descent is steep, but it gives you a much better appreciation for just how deep you’re going.

If you have younger kids, mobility concerns or simply don’t want the hike, you can also use the elevator to access the cavern.

Explore the Big Room

Once you’re underground, don’t miss the Big Room. This is the part of Carlsbad Caverns that really makes you stop and stare. The chamber is enormous, and the relatively flat walking trail takes you past some of the park’s most impressive cave formations. Plan plenty of time. This isn’t somewhere I’d rush through just to say you’ve been there.

Timed Entry Reservations

Carlsbad Caverns currently uses timed entry reservations for cavern access, and reservations are strongly recommended. Your reservation reserves your cavern entry time. You’ll still need the appropriate park admission when you arrive.

Cavern entrance hours can also be much earlier than people expect. As of 2026, cavern entry is generally from 9:30 AM until 2:30 PM, with the last ticket sold at 2:15 PM.

Don’t plan on arriving late in the afternoon and heading underground! Always verify current hours and reservation requirements before your trip.

Don’t Miss the Bat Flight

If you’re visiting during bat season, stay for the evening Bat Flight Program. Thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats can emerge from the cavern around sunset to feed. Watching the bats spiral out of the cave is one of those experiences that makes Carlsbad Caverns even more memorable. Bat activity is seasonal, so check the National Park Service’s current schedule when planning your trip.

How Much Time Do You Need?

I recommend giving Carlsbad Caverns at least one full day. If you’re driving all the way from Dallas, though, turn it into a bigger Southwest road trip!

Carlsbad pairs perfectly with nearby Guadalupe Mountains National Park. You can also extend the trip farther into New Mexico and visit White Sands National Park.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Do the Natural Entrance if your family is physically able to handle the descent. It makes the experience feel much more adventurous than simply taking the elevator underground.

And wear comfortable shoes — you’ll do more walking than you think!

3. Stephens Gap Callahan Cave Preserve – Alabama

If you’ve seen a photo of Stephens Gap, there’s a good chance you’ve immediately added it to your bucket list.

This one is WILD.

Stephens Gap Callahan Cave Preserve is located in Jackson County in northeastern Alabama and is protected by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy.

The cave features an approximately 143-foot open-air pit, and when the conditions are right, sunlight pours through the opening and creates one of the most incredible cave scenes you’ll ever see.

The Hike to Stephens Gap

Reaching the cave requires a hike of approximately 3/4 of a mile with about 300 feet of elevation gain. This isn’t a paved tourist attraction or traditional show cave. Expect a more rugged experience. The reward is reaching one of the most spectacular cave entrances in the Southeast.

Do You Have to Rappel?

NO — and this is important! You do not need to rappel into the vertical pit to experience Stephens Gap. There is also a steep horizontal walk-in entrance to the cave. The vertical pit requires proper vertical caving skills and equipment and should absolutely not be attempted by inexperienced visitors. You can still have an incredible Stephens Gap experience without rappelling into the pit.

You Need a Permit

Stephens Gap is managed by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy (SCCi), and visitors need a permit. Permits are currently available through SCCi’s online permit system, and Stephens Gap is listed as offering same-day permits then available. Do not just show up assuming you can enter. Make obtaining your permit part of your trip planning.

Protect the Cave

Stephens Gap is located in an area affected by White-nose Syndrome, a disease that has devastated bat populations. Follow all SCCi clean-caving and decontamination requirements and never bring dirty cave gear from one cave into another. These places are incredible because organizations and visitors work to protect them.

What to Bring

For Stephens Gap, I’d recommend:

  • Hiking shoes with good traction
  • Headlamp
  • Backup light
  • Water
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Your permit information
  • Small daypack

And check conditions before your visit. Wet rocks and mud can completely change the difficulty of a cave adventure.

Road Trip Queen Tip

If you’re visiting primarily to see and photograph the famous pit, you don’t need technical vertical caving skills.

Know your limits, stay well back from dangerous drop-offs and never attempt vertical cave exploration without the proper training and equipment.

This is one of those places where the adventure is incredible even without taking unnecessary risks.

4. Maquoketa Caves State Park – Iowa

Maquoketa Caves State Park might be the biggest surprise on this list. When most people picture Iowa, they’re probably not imagining themselves crawling through caves with a flashlight. But that’s exactly why this road trip is so much fun.

Maquoketa Caves has more caves than any other Iowa state park, with a network of caves connected by hiking trails through forests, cliffs and unusual rock formations.

This is less of a “take a tour and look at the cave” experience and more of a choose-your-own-adventure cave day.

Explore the Caves

The park has around 13 caves, and they vary dramatically. Some allow you to walk through relatively easily. Others require crawling, ducking and squeezing through narrow passages.

One of the highlights is Dancehall Cave, the park’s largest and most accessible cave experience. You can walk upright through much of it, making it a good place to start before deciding how adventurous you want to get.

Other caves are considerably tighter. If your kids LOVE exploring, this place is basically one giant natural playground.

Hiking at Maquoketa Caves

The park has approximately six miles of hiking trails connecting caves and scenic features.

Don’t miss:

  • Dancehall Cave
  • Natural Bridge
  • Balanced Rock
  • The smaller caves along the trail system
  • The forested hiking trails between cave entrances

The Natural Bridge rises about 50 feet above Raccoon Creek, while Balanced Rock is an enormous 17-ton rock formation.

You Will Get Dirty

This is not the cave destination where I’d wear your cute vacation outfit. Wear clothes and shoes that can handle mud. Some of the caves involve crawling, and cave surfaces can be wet and slippery. Bring flashlights or headlamps for everyone in your group. I strongly prefer headlamps because they keep your hands free while you’re climbing or crawling.

Seasonal Cave Closures

This one is VERY important when planning your road trip. The caves at Maquoketa Caves State Park close annually for bat hibernation. They are generally closed from November 15 through April 1.

If exploring the caves is the reason for your trip, plan for spring through fall and verify current cave and trail conditions before making the drive.

Road Trip Queen Tip

Let everyone wear old clothes. Seriously. Your kids will have WAY more fun if you aren’t constantly telling them not to get muddy. Bring a change of clothes and shoes in the car and let them explore!

Which Cave Road Trip from Dallas Should You Choose?

Honestly, these four trips are so different that I’d choose based on the kind of adventure you want.

If you want the easiest weekend from Dallas:
Choose Alabaster Caverns State Park.

If you want the biggest WOW factor without technical caving:
Choose Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

If you want the most dramatic adventure and photos:
Choose Stephens Gap.

If your family wants to crawl, explore and get dirty:
Choose Maquoketa Caves State Park.

And if you’re anything like us? Eventually, you’ll want to do all four.

What to Pack for a Cave Road Trip

Cave trips require a slightly different packing list than your typical hiking road trip.

I recommend bringing:

For wild caves or more technical cave adventures, always follow the specific equipment and safety requirements established by the park or cave preserve.

Cave Safety Tips for Families

Caves are incredible places to explore, but they’re also natural environments.

Trails can be dark, slippery, steep and uneven.

Always stay on designated routes, follow park rules and pay attention to closures.

Never enter technical or vertical cave areas without the appropriate skills and equipment.

And one of the most important cave rules is simple:

Leave it exactly as you found it.

Don’t touch formations unless the park specifically allows it. Cave formations can take thousands of years to develop, and oils from our hands can damage them.

Best Time of Year for a Cave Road Trip from Dallas

One reason I love cave road trips is that the underground temperature is often much cooler and more consistent than the weather above ground.

That makes caves especially appealing during warmer months. However, each destination has different seasonal considerations.

Alabaster Caverns: A great year-round option, but Oklahoma summer temperatures above ground can be extremely hot.

Carlsbad Caverns: Open most of the year, but summer temperatures in the Chihuahuan Desert can be intense. Spring and fall are excellent times to combine the cavern with outdoor hiking.

Stephens Gap: Spring and fall can provide comfortable hiking weather. Conditions around the cave can become slippery after rain.

Maquoketa Caves: Plan between spring and fall if cave exploration is your priority because the caves close during the winter bat-hibernation season.

Always check the official destination website immediately before your trip. Cave access, trail conditions, tours and permit requirements can change.

Pair your cave adventure with other stops in western or northwestern Oklahoma for an easy long weekend from Dallas.

Combine: Carlsbad Caverns National Park + Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Have more time? Add White Sands National Park and turn it into an epic New Mexico road trip.

Stephens Gap Road Trip

Northeastern Alabama is packed with waterfalls, caves and outdoor adventures, making Stephens Gap an excellent anchor for a longer Southeast road trip.

Maquoketa Caves Road Trip

Turn the long drive into part of the adventure by adding stops through Missouri or exploring more of Iowa rather than treating Maquoketa as a simple out-and-back trip.

Final Thoughts: The Best Cave Road Trips from Dallas

There is something completely different about walking — or crawling — underneath the earth.

You can hike mountains and chase waterfalls on plenty of road trips, but descending into a cave feels like entering another world.

Texas is within road-trip distance of some of the most incredible national parks in the country. From towering mountain peaks and bright white sand dunes to giant cacti, underground caves, ancient cliff dwellings, and red-rock canyons, there is a national park road trip from Dallas for almost every kind of traveler.

Our family has learned that the drive is part of the adventure. We would rather load up the car, stop somewhere interesting along the way, and turn one national park into a full family road trip than rush through a destination. These 11 national parks are all reachable from Texas and worth building a vacation around.

This guide includes approximate drive times from Dallas, how long to spend at each park, the best time to visit, where to stay, top things to do, and nearby destinations you can add to the trip.

1. Zion National Park, Utah

Approximate drive from Dallas: 16–17 hours
How long to spend: At least two full park days; four to six days for the complete road trip
Best time to visit: Spring or fall
Best home base: Springdale, Utah

Zion is one of those places that feels even bigger and more dramatic in person. Massive sandstone cliffs rise above the canyon, and the park has everything from easy riverside walks to bucket-list adventures.

Top things to do in Zion

  • Ride the Zion Canyon shuttle and take in the views along Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
  • Walk the Pa’rus Trail, an easy paved trail that is especially beautiful near sunset.
  • Hike the Canyon Overlook Trail for a big view without an all-day hike.
  • Follow the Riverside Walk toward the entrance to The Narrows.
  • Hike The Narrows if conditions are safe and your family is prepared for walking through water.
  • Visit the Emerald Pools or Watchman area for additional family-friendly trails.

Where to stay

Springdale is the most convenient base because it sits immediately outside the park entrance and offers hotels, restaurants, outfitters, and seasonal shuttle service. Staying in Springdale costs more, but it can save a great deal of driving and parking frustration. Hurricane and St. George usually have more lodging choices if you do not mind a longer commute.

Add to your road trip

Pair Zion with Bryce Canyon National Park, which is roughly two hours away. Page, Arizona, also fits well into a longer loop and gives you access to Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, and guided Antelope Canyon tours.

Know before you go

Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is generally accessed by shuttle during the busy season. Popular permitted hikes have separate requirements, so check the official park website before planning your itinerary.

2. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Approximate drive from Dallas: 20–21 hours
How long to spend: Three park days; six to nine days for the full road trip
Best time to visit: June through September
Best home base: Jackson, Teton Village, or inside the park

Grand Teton is the longest drive on this list, but those jagged mountain peaks are absolutely worth it. The park combines mountain scenery, wildlife, alpine lakes, scenic drives, and trails for a wide range of ability levels.

Top things to do in Grand Teton

  • Drive Teton Park Road and stop at the scenic overlooks.
  • Visit Mormon Row for the classic barn-and-mountain view.
  • Walk around Jenny Lake or ride the seasonal boat shuttle across the lake.
  • Hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point.
  • Look for wildlife around Oxbow Bend, Willow Flats, and Moose-Wilson Road.
  • Watch sunrise at Schwabacher Landing.
  • Spend time at String Lake, where families can picnic, paddle, and enjoy the mountain views.

Where to stay

Jackson has the largest selection of hotels, rentals, restaurants, and activities. Lodging inside the park puts you closer to sunrise views and trailheads, but it often books far in advance. Reserve early for summer travel.

Add to your road trip

Yellowstone National Park borders Grand Teton to the north, making the two parks a natural pairing. Allow at least two to three additional days for Yellowstone—more if you want to explore it without rushing.

Know before you go

Weather changes quickly in the mountains, even in summer. Pack layers and keep a safe distance from all wildlife. Bears are active in the region, so learn current bear-safety guidance and carry bear spray where advised.

3. White Sands National Park, New Mexico

Approximate drive from Dallas: 9–10 hours
How long to spend: One park day; three to four days for the road trip
Best time to visit: October through April
Best home base: Alamogordo, New Mexico

White Sands looks like snow in the middle of the desert, but the rolling dunes are made of brilliant white gypsum. It is one of the most unique national parks within a manageable drive of Dallas and a huge hit with kids.

Top things to do at White Sands

  • Drive the eight-mile Dunes Drive through the heart of the dunefield.
  • Sled down the dunes on a waxed plastic saucer.
  • Walk the short Interdune Boardwalk.
  • Follow the Dune Life Nature Trail for a closer look at desert plants and animals.
  • Stay for sunset when the dunes take on soft pink, purple, and gold tones.
  • Join a ranger program if one is offered during your visit.

Where to stay

Alamogordo is about 20 minutes from the park and has the most convenient hotels and restaurants. Las Cruces offers more dining and lodging but adds roughly an hour of driving each way.

Add Cloudcroft for mountain scenery, cooler temperatures, and hiking. Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains can also be combined with White Sands for an unforgettable southern New Mexico and West Texas national park loop.

Know before you go

The dunes have very little shade, and summer temperatures can be intense. Bring more water than you think you need. Missile-range testing can occasionally close the park or nearby highway temporarily, so check current conditions before driving out.

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Approximate drive from Dallas: 13–14 hours
How long to spend: Two to three park days; four to six days total
Best time to visit: June through September for the most open roads and trails; fall for elk and golden aspens
Best home base: Estes Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the best mountain road trips from Dallas. It offers alpine lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, tundra views, and one of the most memorable scenic drives in the country.

Top things to do in Rocky Mountain

  • Drive Trail Ridge Road when it is open and stop at the overlooks.
  • Visit Bear Lake and hike to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald lakes.
  • Walk around Sprague Lake for an easier family outing.
  • Hike to Alberta Falls.
  • Look for elk in Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park.
  • Explore the less-crowded Wild Basin area.
  • Spend an evening walking and eating in downtown Estes Park.

Where to stay

Estes Park is the easiest base for the east side of the park and has cabins, vacation rentals, hotels, and family activities. Grand Lake works well if you want to explore the quieter west side or continue toward other parts of Colorado.

Break up the drive in Colorado Springs and visit Garden of the Gods. Boulder, Denver, and the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway can also be worked into a longer Colorado itinerary.

Know before you go

Rocky Mountain National Park uses timed-entry reservations during designated dates and hours. The Bear Lake Road corridor may require a specific reservation. Trail Ridge Road is seasonal and can close because of snow or severe weather even outside winter.

5. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Approximate drive from Dallas: 13–14 hours
How long to spend: Two park days; four to five days total
Best time to visit: November through March
Best home base: Tucson, Arizona

Saguaro National Park protects a desert landscape filled with the giant cacti that have become a symbol of the American Southwest. The park is split into two districts on opposite sides of Tucson, and both are worth seeing.

Top things to do in Saguaro

  • Drive the Bajada Loop in the Tucson Mountain District on the west side.
  • Drive Cactus Forest Loop in the Rincon Mountain District on the east side.
  • Walk the accessible Desert Discovery Nature Trail.
  • Hike the Valley View Overlook Trail for a short trail with a rewarding view.
  • See petroglyphs along the Signal Hill Trail.
  • Watch the sunset behind the saguaros.
  • Visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum near the park’s west district.

Where to stay

Stay in Tucson and choose your hotel based on which side of the park you want to visit first. Because the two districts are separated by the city, plan one district per day instead of trying to bounce back and forth.

Where to stay

Moab is the obvious home base, with a wide range of hotels, campgrounds, vacation rentals, restaurants, and outfitters. It also places you close to Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park.

Combine Arches with the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point State Park. If you have a full week, add Capitol Reef National Park to create a longer Utah road trip.

Parking lots at popular trailheads can fill early, and summer heat is intense. Reservation systems and entrance procedures may change from year to year, so check the official Arches trip-planning page before your visit.

7. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Carlsbad Caverns is one of the easiest national park road trips from Dallas and one of the most different. Instead of mountain overlooks or desert trails, the main adventure takes you deep underground into enormous chambers filled with formations.

  • Walk down through the Natural Entrance for the full underground experience.
  • Explore the Big Room route, the park’s classic self-guided cavern walk.
  • Take the elevator if you need a shorter or more accessible visit.

  • Attend the seasonal evening Bat Flight Program.
  • Drive the Walnut Canyon Desert Drive if it is open and road conditions allow.

Where to stay

Carlsbad has the largest selection of hotels and restaurants. White’s City is closer to the park entrance but has fewer choices. Book early during holidays and school breaks.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is less than an hour away, so the two parks should almost always be combined. You can also continue to White Sands National Park and turn the trip into a three-park loop.

Know before you go

Timed cavern-entry reservations are required, and a reservation does not replace the park entrance fee or pass. The cave stays cool year-round, so bring a light layer even when it is hot outside. Bat activity is seasonal and never guaranteed.

8. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

The park has no lodge, restaurant, gas station, or reliable cell service. Many visitors stay in Carlsbad, about 45 minutes away, because it has the nearest large selection of hotels and food. Camping is available but limited.

Carlsbad Caverns is the perfect companion park. White Sands can be added for a longer loop, or you can stop in the Davis Mountains and Fort Davis on the way to or from Dallas.

Know before you go

Guadalupe Mountains is remote, and high winds are common. Fill your gas tank before arriving, carry plenty of food and water, download maps for offline use, and do not count on cell service. There are no scenic drives through the main mountain area; experiencing the park generally requires walking or hiking.

11. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Best home base: Grand Canyon Village, Tusayan, or Williams, Arizona

No photo can fully prepare you for the first time you see the Grand Canyon. The South Rim is open year-round and is the most practical rim for a road trip from Texas, with overlooks, trails, shuttles, visitor services, and lodging.

Top things to do at the Grand Canyon

  • Walk part of the mostly paved Rim Trail.
  • Ride the park shuttle to overlooks along Hermit Road when seasonal restrictions are in place.
  • Watch sunrise or sunset from Mather Point, Yavapai Point, Hopi Point, or another designated overlook.
  • Drive Desert View Drive and stop at Grandview Point, Moran Point, Lipan Point, and Desert View Watchtower.
  • Hike a portion of the Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trail—but remember that the climb out is far harder than the hike down.
  • Explore the historic buildings and viewpoints in Grand Canyon Village.

Where to stay

Lodging inside Grand Canyon Village is the most convenient and should be reserved well in advance. Tusayan is just outside the park entrance. Williams is farther away but offers more choices and the option to ride the Grand Canyon Railway.

Add to your road trip

Add Petrified Forest National Park along an Interstate 40 route. Page, Arizona, is another excellent extension for Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, and Antelope Canyon tours. Sedona and Flagstaff work well if you want to add red rocks, restaurants, and more hiking.

Know before you go

The South Rim and North Rim are separated by a long drive, so confirm which rim you are navigating to. Do not attempt to hike from the rim to the Colorado River and back in one day. Summer heat increases rapidly below the rim, and snow or ice can affect the rim in winter. Lodging and camping reservations are strongly recommended.

The Best National Park Road Trip Loops from Texas

If you want to visit more than one park, these groupings make the most geographic sense:

West Texas and Southern New Mexico Loop

Guadalupe Mountains → Carlsbad Caverns → White Sands

This is the easiest three-park loop from Dallas. Allow four to six days, depending on how much hiking you want to do and whether you add Cloudcroft.

Southern Utah Loop

Zion → Bryce Canyon → Arches

Allow at least seven to nine days because the parks are spread out and each deserves more than a quick overlook. Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Grand Staircase–Escalante can be added if you have more time.

Arizona Desert and Canyon Loop

Saguaro → Grand Canyon

Allow six to eight days and add Sedona, Petrified Forest National Park, or Page. Because Tucson and the South Rim are several hours apart, the in-between stops turn the transfer day into part of the adventure.

Colorado Mountain and History Loop

Rocky Mountain → Mesa Verde

These parks sit on opposite sides of Colorado, so allow at least seven to nine days. Break up the drive with Colorado Springs, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Durango, or another Colorado stop.

Wyoming Mountain Loop

Grand Teton → Yellowstone

Although Yellowstone is not one of the 11 parks featured in this Reel, it is directly north of Grand Teton and makes sense on the same long road trip. Give the pair at least six park days, plus driving time from Texas.

Tips for Planning a National Park Road Trip from Texas

Buy an annual park pass if the math makes sense

If your road trip includes several fee-charging national parks, compare individual entrance fees with the current price of the America the Beautiful annual pass. The pass covers entrance fees at participating federal recreation sites, but it does not cover extras such as cave tours, timed-entry reservations, lodging, or camping.

Download maps before leaving town

Cell service can be weak or nonexistent in and around many parks. Download offline maps, save your lodging address, and screenshot reservation confirmations before you travel.

Check the official park page before every visit

Road closures, shuttle schedules, tour availability, fire restrictions, construction, weather, and reservation systems can change. Check the park’s official alerts and current conditions shortly before your trip—not only when you first start planning.

Start early

Arriving early helps with parking, heat, crowds, and wildlife viewing. It also gives your family time to slow down instead of racing from one viewpoint to another.

Pack for changing conditions

Texas weather does not prepare us for every environment on this list. A sunny desert day can become cold after sunset, and mountain weather can change quickly. Bring layers, sun protection, sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and a basic car emergency kit.

Do not schedule every minute

Leave room for overlooks, wildlife traffic, short trails, snack breaks, and unexpected stops. Some of our favorite road-trip moments have happened in places we did not originally plan to visit.

One of my favorite things about living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is how many completely different destinations we can reach on a road trip. Within a few hours, you can trade the city for waterfalls, lakes, cabins tucked into the forest, mountain trails, wildlife and even one of the most incredible cave systems in the country.

Whether you want an easy two-night escape or you’re willing to make a longer drive to take full advantage of the three-day weekend, here are 8 Labor Day weekend road trips from Dallas worth adding to your list.

Labor Day Tip: Holiday weekends are BUSY. Make lodging, camping and park reservations as early as possible, and always check current park conditions before leaving home.

1. Turner Falls Park, Oklahoma

Distance from Dallas: Approximately 130 miles
Drive Time: About 2 hours
Location: Davis, Oklahoma
Best For: Waterfalls, swimming, families and an easy weekend getaway

If you want maximum vacation vibes without spending half of your weekend in the car, Turner Falls is hard to beat.

The main attraction at Turner Falls Park is the 77-foot waterfall cascading into a natural swimming area in the Arbuckle Mountains. But don’t make the mistake of taking a picture of the waterfall and immediately leaving—the park has plenty to keep you busy for the day.

Turner Falls gets extremely busy during summer weekends and holidays, so Labor Day weekend is not the time to wing it. Purchase admission ahead of time and arrive early.

Water conditions can also affect which swimming areas are open, so check current conditions before making the drive.

Road Trip Queen Tip: If your main goal is photos and swimming, arrive as early as possible. You’ll have a much better experience before the biggest crowds arrive.

2. Lost Forest Cabins + Sam Houston National Forest, Texas

3. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma

The Wichita Mountains are one of my favorite examples of a place that simply doesn’t look like it should be this close to Dallas.

The landscape combines rugged granite mountains, prairie, lakes and roaming wildlife—and it’s completely different from the scenery you’ll find around DFW.

  • Drive Mount Scott Road
  • Look for free-roaming bison and longhorn
  • Visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
  • Hike among the granite mountains
  • Explore Jed Johnson Lake

  • Visit nearby Medicine Park
  • Stop at scenic overlooks

The refuge itself does not charge an entrance fee.

IMPORTANT FOR LABOR DAY 2026

As of August 2026, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has temporary extreme-heat hiking restrictions in place.

Hiking is currently allowed from sunrise until 10:00 a.m. only, and hikers must be off trails and the Mount Scott roadway by 10:00 a.m. Roads remain open to vehicles and bicycles, and fishing, picnicking and Doris Campground continue during their normal operating hours.

Check the refuge website immediately before your trip in case these restrictions change.

You have several good options:

Medicine Park: Best for charm and being close to the refuge.

Lawton: Best if you want more hotels, restaurants and conveniences.

Doris Campground: Best if you want to camp inside the refuge. Camping requires reservations.

If your idea of the perfect Labor Day involves swimsuits rather than hiking boots, head to Lake Conroe.

The lake covers approximately 22,000 acres with 157 miles of shoreline, so there are plenty of ways to build an entire weekend around the water.

If I were picking one Texas state park for an end-of-summer lake weekend, Inks Lake State Park would be high on my list.

The biggest draw is Devil’s Waterhole, a beautiful section of the lake surrounded by pink granite rock formations.

  • Explore the rocky shoreline

The park is open daily and currently charges $7 per adult age 13 and older; children 12 and younger enter free.

RESERVE BEFORE YOU GO

Inks Lake frequently reaches capacity, and Texas Parks & Wildlife highly recommends making reservations for both camping and day use.

For Labor Day weekend, I would consider a reservation essential rather than optional.

Where to Stay

Option 1: Camp inside Inks Lake State Park

The park has campsites with electricity as well as other camping options.

Option 2: Stay in a park cabin

Inks Lake has 22 basic cabins. They sleep four and currently start at $55 per night plus entrance fees. There is a two-night minimum over Labor Day.

Option 3: Stay in Burnet or Marble Falls

This is a good option if camping isn’t your thing.

Make It a Hill Country Weekend

If you have extra time, nearby attractions include:

  • Longhorn Cavern State Park
  • Marble Falls
  • Buchanan Dam
  • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Road Trip Queen Tip: Make Devil’s Waterhole your morning activity before the heat and crowds peak, then spend the afternoon kayaking or relaxing by the water.

6. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

Drive Time: Around 5.5–6 hours
Location: Morrilton, Arkansas
Best For: Waterfalls, hiking, cabins and mountain scenery

If you’re willing to drive a little farther, Petit Jean State Park feels like a true vacation without requiring a flight.

Petit Jean was Arkansas’s first state park and combines waterfalls, overlooks, forests, interesting rock formations and historic Civilian Conservation Corps architecture.

Don’t Miss Cedar Falls

The star attraction is Cedar Falls, which drops approximately 95 feet into Cedar Creek Canyon.

The hike down into the canyon is beautiful, but remember that you’ll have to climb back out. Bring water and plan for heat over Labor Day weekend.

Waterfall flow depends heavily on recent rainfall, so don’t assume Cedar Falls will look the same year-round.

Labor Day falls during bat-flight season.

Carlsbad Caverns currently offers a free evening Bat Flight Program from April through October. No reservation is required, and seating is first come, first served.

You’ll hear a ranger presentation and then watch Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the cavern around sunset.

Important: Electronic devices, including phones and cameras, are not allowed during the Bat Flight Program. Put the phone away and enjoy this one!
